Can you hang an sm57 off the amp handle?

Hi there!
Due to space restrictions, I cannot use any stands around here.
Looking for mics that can record cabs being hung off the handles facing down.

Googling,
The Sennheiser E609 and E906 appear to be the only mics in the world that can do that, but they aren't available in my country.

What would happen to the sound if I hung a 57 face down on a guitar cab? like so (from google)

57s are real dogs that far off axis. You can tilt them a little bit to reduce proximity effect if it's a problem, but 57s are designed to have pretty aggressive off-axis rejection. I definitely would not record with the set up in the picture.

Using a Cardioid mic off axis will sound dull and thin.

Exactly. It wouldn't be my first choice but it works.

I wouldn't do that, but it will make sound. The diaphragm will be facing the floor instead of the speaker.

There are various options that can attach to or hang off an amp.

This one is called the Z Bar

Yeah. It just doesn't sound very good. Get a ribbon mic

Can' you perhaps put a regular stand behind the amp, with 1 foot of the tripod underneath the amp, and angle the arm out infront facing back towards the amp?

As others have said, yes you can do it. It's a cardioid mic pattern, so it picks up audio from the sides.

It will change the tone a bit because it's 90 degrees off axis, and possibly some proximity effect depending on how close it is to the speaker cone.

Z Bar looks interesting. A trip to the hardware store and a rubber mallet, and you could rog something up pre quickly.

Is it too expensive to get a Sennheiser shipped to you? There are plenty used in the US for low $$'s.
PS - Yes, I've done that with a 57. You may need to EQ it some at the board but it works for guitar or harp (not bass).
