You gotta love Stravinsky - sounds like it's going to be a train wreck but everything works perfectly. Double bass with a bow works for that but not much else.

My 6 string with active soapbars and 3 band preamp can sound like any of those 3 basses and a whole lot more.
I’d venture that a p, j, and stingray is still 2 more basses than you need to cover that spectrum. Couldn’t say which 2, though.

In that case, does it matter which bass the player is not playing?
I can't think of any song that couldn't be played on any bass. Of course, fretted to fretless is more obvious, but every time I ever thought 'you can't do that on one of THOSE', sure enough, there's a guy doing it.
Granted, maybe slapping on a Hofner, but otherwise, I think the limiting factor is the player, not the bass. Guys have their fave player, buy his sig bass, etc., and they never sound like him. Plus, in the recording process and all the different 'gates' between that original recoding and your ears listening to it, a lot can happen, I'm dumbstruck we get these questions about 'how do I get this tone' from a guy listening through the speaker on his phone . .

I saw a video of a guy playing the yes song SOUNDCHASER on a hofner with flatwounds. It sounded pretty decent, so there is that..
All joking aside, and this is not trolling, am I missing something? I feel like a total novice when all of these "I need this specific instrument to play these types of songs" posts come up. Can someone explain to me why we need to care about what exact bass guitar should be used to play various songs?
I don't generally care, and I used the same bass to play a wide variety of tunes in many genres when in a wedding / cover band. No one in the audience cared what instruments any of us played.
That's my point. It really doesn't matter, just make it your own. I asked that question so somebody could proof me wrong.
Most people playing covers will use the same bass all night. You might want a particular bass is you are in a tribute band, but that might well be more for show than for sound.
