Canadian Cover Tunes

I'm a Canuck living in Sweden, and my current band has these Canadian Artist songs in the sets:

Black Velvet - Alannah Myles;
Still got this thing - Alannah Myles;
Cuts like a knife - B. Adams;
Somebody - B. Adams;
Rockin the Free World - Neil Young;
The Trees - Rush;
Red Barchetta - Rush

The Rush were recently added after I joined. I told them is we're playing some Canadian, then we have to do Rush and NO NICKLEBACK!!!!

oh I have heard them...a great deal.. but I thought the OP wanted suggestions for good Canadian bands... :)

King of Spain/Humble Pie - future generations will use that as evidence of the lack of selectivity or ability to perceive talent on behalf of all of us in the 90s. Just an abomination of a hit song....awful, silly and dumb.

imo - awful band, awful tunes which begat an awful host of an awful show....amazing what a handsome brown dude will be given in PC-obsessed Toronto. ;)

Almost like Jann Arden V 2.0 - deemed by CBC to be a celebrity, open wide Canada, here it comes..... :)

I am no Nickelback fan....but really Alannah Myles is kosher but not knuckledrag...I mean Nickelback? ;)

Rocking in the Free World should be on the list of songs none of us are ever allowed to play again...like Mustang Sally and Brown Eyed Girl....(imho, ime etc etc....of course) :)

I also used to play lots of Bryan Adams songs as well as some Jeff Healey Band and The Stampeders too. I also jammed with the drummer of The Headstones at Jeff Healey's nightclub in Toronto - does that count? :rolleyes:

LOL, every song of his sounds like a different rendition of The Hockey Song (Stompin' Tom Connors - The Hockey Song - YouTube)... A song I had a fun time jamming to. I do some jam sessions and Blue Rodeo and Neil Young songs come up often...

But looking at this list, I really feel like The Guess Who are a bit underappreciated. Don't get me wrong, there are lots of posts about them.. But maybe I just like them more than most, but their bassist is a really good bassist... Love his playing in Undun (Invalid Link Removed)

I have no intention of playing it live, but I'm working on a cover of Siberia by LIGHTS. Very bassy.

I had no idea the Five Man Electric band were from up here. This thread makes me see how much Canadian music I really don't like. Of course there's obvious exceptions like The Kings, Streetheart, Harlequin, Rush and the previously mentioned LIGHTS (who's a total hottie, and we share the same birthday!)

I always liked The Crash Test Dummies but never played any of their songs.

I am not familiar with some songs by newer Canadian acts like Arcade Fire, Avril Lavigne, Hedley, Simple Plan, and Sum 41. Do any of their songs go over well?

In my country project we do:
We're Here For A Good Time - Trooper (not Terri Clark's version)
Day Job - Gord Bamford
Hockey Song (during the playoffs if the Canucks are playing) - Stompin Tom
Blue Canadian Rockies - Wilf Carter with some Sons of the Pioneers backing vocals

Also did Undone - BTO until the guitar player retired. Great tune & tons of fun to play, but not something you can just sit in on.

There is a whole bunch of other songs that have been mentioned that were on the set lists of bands I've played with over the years. Never gave much thought to them being Canadian, just good dance tunes.

Not enough of us giving Gordie Johnson the respect he's due!

Big Sugar has a ton of great tunes, as does Grady (that guitar riff in Spadina (Who is Loving You Tonight) is killer!) No video for that one, so let's check out If I Was King. They are based in Austin, but they have always been at least 2/3 Canadian content!

All Hell For a Basement is a staple for our jam nights, and Ride Like Hell is creeping in. God I love the sound of that black Les Paul! (Thornley in that one too, another Canuck with a ton of great tunes)

Here's a couple more I want to get in the rotation too.
