Cancelled a NYE gig

You find wood heat odd?
I suppose it depends on where you live. Maybe more common than I realize.

As to the actual point of this thread, this gig is far enough out that they should be able to find a sub. I don't see how the finances work out at all or what made him think this was a good deal. A top wedding band in downtown Chicago, for example, would probably make at least $13,000-15,000 on NYE, especially considering the other potential NYE gigs they'd be giving up for a wedding.

More importantly, you have three kids, an ailing parent, and this is not your primary source of income. He's in a different stage of life without any of those things. You're bound to have mismatches and this probably won't be the last time.

All I ever had growing up.
More common than not here. We're in a smaller outlying area, no gas here, so it's either propane tanks in the backyard, firewood piles, or high power bills.(what I have)

I use wood heat to supplement for electric. Which is odd considering where I live. You'd think Gas would be a given but I can't even get plumbed for it...

I grew up with wood heat, and have many friends that heat with wood, or wood products like pellets.

Well I had to google it to be sure. I really thought you were just making something up to troll the thread. Wikipedia claims that's also a thing here in Missouri, but I've lived on both sides of the state and never heard of it 'til now. Hmmm. I'm sorry, but from my point of view that's just nuts!

I see what you did there...perhaps I should not be sharing about how lucrative these gigs are!!! The one I am playing at tomorrow is a smaller one, but the one I played at last year draws between 15 and 20,000 people throughout the course of the day, two giant circus tents put together end to end, packed to the gils!!!

It might be a bad gig but you did agree to it. If you do that and a conflict develops, the conflict is your problem to resolve, not your bandmates'. Your responsibility is to find a sub.

If you can't, you can't - and your dad's surgery is indeed more important. But if the band can't do the gig, it's on you completely.

It's early and I still haven't had my breakfast, but I had to read that a couple of times. LOL I kept thinking thats an awfully big range to plan for, what do you do with all the extra turkey balls if the turnout comes out on the low end?

LOL... I am still working on my first cup of coffee, but that is funny as all get out!

True. Had I gotten the nitty gritty details when it was initially booked I wouldn't have agreed to be his roadie. I made the mistake of assuming we would be doing this together. Lesson learned.
But..
My thoughts exactly. The groom has asked his friend to play at his wedding but "i can't spend much". Friends says "look, fly me and my girl there and back, put us up in a room, some food and drinks, and i'll get the rest of the band to do it for $500"

Consensus seems to be $500 for a NYE wedding is too good to be true.

I completely disagree. He has given plenty of heads up for them to get a sub and also gave a conditional acceptance of the gig. Band does not trump all others by any means.

I'm not seeing the "conditional acceptance" part of the OP's story; admit that could make a difference.

Other than that, though, the OP can cancel the gig and probably can do so in good conscience because his family situation is more important. It is, truly.

That does not change the fact that he is the one who cancelled, and the bad is on him. Any thoughts about this somehow being the other bandmates' fault because the gig wasn't good enough to keep is either immature or delusional. Once you agree to them, they're all the same.

I'll see in the next week or so if this is something I'll continue to be a part of.
There's been issues before.
During the summer, this guy did almost the same thing to me. I booked a gig, with all three of us present, terms were clear. Two weeks out, the organizer of what he feels is a "better" gig changed a date and now it's a conflict. Emails me and basically says "cancel that we're playing this other one instead".
I should have quit or threatened to right then. But I was the new guy and didn't want to make waves.
I had to call and cancel, (with a family friend BTW) we were THE band for a town street festival.
That was the last gig I booked for this band.
Not that I'm being vengeful, this is circumstantial.
I can't get them to spend a dime on improved monitors or personal DIs, to share cost/setup/hauling.

I don't enjoy going back on my word, no matter what the situation, and you better believe if I do I've got a good reason.

I totally get that. And for the record, I would make the same decision you did.

My post is less a criticism of your thought process and more about all the other people telling you that the poor quality of the gig makes it somehow OK to cancel. It's a cancellation, for good reason or otherwise.

I'm just wondering why your parents (both with health concerns) only have wood heat!

It may surprise some of you, but not everyone has access to things a lot of us take for granted.

My dad only has wood heat and lives in a small metal garage in a tiny remote town where most of the buildings are crumbled and in ruins.

No phone or internet availability (not that he would ever use it) and very poor cell coverage at his house. He gets less than half the calls and usually returns them when he goes into the nearest town that is actually civilized (20-30 miles away) He is in his 70's and to say I worry about him is an understatement, but it would take a small army to get him to move.

I get that. I live in the mountains and have no cell service at all but I would think that they have electricity, gas or both.
