Cannabis

I remember reading that the schizo/other disease was actually a myth that had been debunked. I can't provide you a link atm but I could probably find it.

Don't buy into that... You can't just outright debunk something like that. Cannabis is a psychoactive drug. The whole reason you get stoned is because it plays with your central nervous system and alters brain function.

While the risk is pretty minimal, if you are susceptible to any psychosis, screwing with your brain chemistry probably isn't the best idea!!

My partner is a nurse. She did a stint in a mental health ward last year. If I went and told her now that apparently they had debunked any psychosis being attached to weed use, she would start laughing uncontrollably :)

I'm all for smoking weed, but just don't sell yourself short by not being aware of the dangers associated with any drug use.

:eyebrow:

Your dad told you this? Did the guy have to walk uphill in the snow to smoke that joint? ;)

I come from a small community, I know a lot of people who know the same story.

And we don't get snow here, my dad did walk to school "All the time" in 50 degree heat though. According to my grandma that happened once :p

Using this same logic, if Hitler had smoked a joint in the 20's or 30's then pot surely must cause people to be genocidal and exterminate millions of people.

Same logic... sounds kind of ridiculous when applied in this scenario doesn't it?

Did you read my other posts? I am VERY pro drugs, however you can't ignore the dangers that using any psychoactive substance may present.

If Hitler was a bit of a weirdo, smoked a joint and completely snapped that day then it would simply support the fact that a psychoactive drug could bring to surface dormant mental issues.

Like I said, smoking a joint will not make just anyone go completely insane, and it may never happen again to anybody ever, however in this case it just so happened that it was enough to cause him to snap, it could have been anything else had he not smoked the joint, he could have stubbed his toe the next day and the mental anguish could have had the same effect, or lost his pet kitten, or had one too many cups of coffee.

It just shows that there is a link between weed and mental issues, any psychological experience will bring out dormant parts of your psychosis, good or bad, and in some cases it can be bad.

That being said, when you are considered to be highly at risk of developing a mental illness or have a family history of it, its probably best to avoid psychedelic drugs.

If you are predisposed to certain psychological issues through genetic's or other, it can be a trigger that set's the ball rolling, it can exacerbate an already pre existing and underlying condition.

As far as de-motivation is concerned weed work's on the same uptake receptors in the brain as the feeling of 'satisfaction' by this I mean, if you do something well, job, playing, creating, you get a glow of 'satisfaction from your work', a mental reward so to speak, weed works on those same receptors too, you get 'rewarded' for well, not doing much/anything at all, in this way it is a de-motivator which mean's that things happening in life that should be addressed, take a back seat, that can be a problem.

I've found people whom I've known with cannabis addiction that are using it for an emotional crutch for already underlying mental issue's, which would be treated with pharmaceutical med's if diagnosed properly, but then you choose which set of side effects you prefer, med's or cannabis, or which works for you and which doesn't.

Skunk I find is so much stronger now with the THC content than back in the day, you do have to treat with more respect ime, weed shouldn't ever be replied upon as an answer to problems, it should just be enjoyed responsibly for what it is imo.

I am openly for marijuana especially due to its medical uses. I will not make any subjective claims nor compare it to smoking/beer/whathaveyou, but it seems to me that the only reason it is illegal is due to some lobbying by the paper industry and a few slippery slope arguments.

I am no stoner either. I have only used once in my life. I'm not advocating it so that I may et my greasy hands on it. I'm advocating for it because I have seen first hand how it has improved the lives of those with severe medical conditions.

Right dude. I totally forgot about all the violence that goes on and all the innocent people who are killed every year due to drugs. Even if you legalize, let's say cocaine, do you really think there won't be junkies who might resort to mugging an innocent by-stander for another 15-20 to go help score again? Same with Heroin and a whole slew of other stuff.

Stoners are too chill to jump somebody for weed money. Pot use is a victimless crime.

A friend of my dad smoked a joint once at a party.

Felt dizzy, went home, killed his dad and wound up in an asylum to this day.

He obviously already had some sort of dormant mental illness that was triggered by smoking, and it could have happened at any time really, but in this case it must have been what pushed him over the edge from a bit weird to totally insane.

I believe it is linked in some way, I know people who get paranoia/panic attacks etc. from smoking lots, however, im pretty sure more people have adverse reactions to peanuts, and peanuts aren't banned.

Im sorry about all that, but pot had nothing to do with it. Really. Like, reeaaaaaally. Triggered by smoking a joint? Thats like, Reefer Madness laughable.

Alcohol, in excess, can make you sick = big $$$ for pharma/insurance companies = legal
Tobacco can make you sick = big $$$ for pharma/insurance companies = legal

Cannabis doesn't = no $$$ for pharma/insurance companies = illegal

For the record, I did use cannabis for years and then I just stopped because it just didn't really fit with me any more. So much for gateway...

Are prescription drugs gateway drugs? Are they more or less likely to be a gateway drug? I see a shorter jump from, say, prescription Valium to heroin than the jump from smoking a joint to heroin. But prescription drugs generate all sorts of income for the big pharma, and the insurance companies (who lobby the politicians).
Control of 'substances' is about control of money. Period.
I'll bet dollars to doughnuts that if cannabis becomes legal Monsanto - or a similar entity - will suddenly appear on the scene with all sorts of controls.

Let's be honest here, this discussion isn't just about the commonly defined "stoners," it's also about the MILLIONS of "casual" users in the U.S.

Some people will always do stupid things and that's never going to change, but correlation and causation are not the same thing, and the anecdotal stories being told in this thread show nothing more than the fact the crazy people do crazy things, AND that sometimes crazy people also smoke marijuana.

That being said, it is ridiculous to imagine muggings and robberies occurring over marijuana in a legalized system, or at least as ridiculous as the same argument being applied to soda pop or chocolate bars. I mean, I'm sure it's probably happened, but certainly not often enough to be an argument for criminalization of any of those items.

Legalization would allow people to grow it. It's called 'weed' because it is a weed.
Nobody will get mugged for pot.
It's a plant. It doesn't even take skill to grow. Probably less skill required than in growing tomatoes.

The only people who will be hurt by people growing and smoking pot are those who would seek revenue from it. As I mentioned above, the likes of Monsanto certainly have some sort of plan ready.

I agree, allowing freedom of choice for a personal grow will cut out the 'middle men'.

They actually like tomato feed too, weeds I mean ; )

Ah, your missing the main reason cannabis is a gateway drug: Its illegal.

You don't get Heroin from a chemist.

While weed is illegal, the gateway drug factor is actually quite correct. I have a personal anecdote about that too, but its not quite so appropriate for a public forum.

Im sorry about all that, but pot had nothing to do with it. Really. Like, reeaaaaaally. Triggered by smoking a joint? Thats like, Reefer Madness laughable.

You are correct, it could have been a chemical in the rollie paper that triggered his dormant schizophrenia, however given that Cannabis is a Psychoactive substance, it seems most probably, doesn't it?

Pretty spot on.

I also like to think that if the drug industry is regulated, and you have to go in to a chemist or whatever and show ID to buy whatever your fix is, that these violent "Junkies" are less likely to exist unless they are buying it through illegal sources (which will still exist). Chemists are not exactly a welcoming environment for someone who just stabbed a guy for $20.
