I have to agree that your cab will inherently have the BOOM factor in spades. To tame that I would consider the above mentioned amp, or if you're set on the 3 it would be the Mesa for me.Try a Quilter Bass Block 800. Well under your budget.

$999 I would say soDarkglass??? Maybe over your budget...
Hey, first of all this is my first post. Been a long time reader but never registered.
Anyway so I bought a SVT 410 hlf used for 300 CDN (220 USD) and I need to find an amp. The cab is rated at 500rms 1000 watt peak and is wired at 4 ohms.
The other day I tried out the Mesa d800, pf500, and a gk mb500.
Ampeg pf500 sounded a bit muddy and had a warm tone to it. The fan on it was also noticeably loud. It's also the cheapest running at $550 ($410 USD). I also like the fact that it has a compressor built right into it.
The Mesa d800 sounded like a better version of the pf500 lol more of a tight warm punchy tone. But it's also the most expensive as its about $1000 CND ($750 USD) with tax.
The GKmb500 definitely had a brighter sound right off the bat. I didn't get much time to play around with the knobs on this one though. I also wasn't really a big fan of the G.I.V.E boost knob. Buttt I may have just had the wrong settings for it to sound good.
In my opinion, all these amps sound good so its difficult to choose which one.
I play in a death metal band (tuned drop C) so I want something that I can cut through 2 loud distorted guitars and a heavy hitting drummer. I also play a lot of punk rock tunes. My budget is $1000 ($750 USD) and under... Preferably under lol So does anyone have any suggestions on any other amps or what amp you prefer in that price range?
Also second question, the guy at the guitar shop said the mesa d800 would not over power my svt 410 hlf. Is that true? I mean my cab is rated at 500 rms so wouldn't 800 watts damage the speakers?
Thanks for reading

I agree with this. I've been in several metal bands. The one thing I wish I understood then was the difference between ported and sealed cabs, as it was never explained to me correctly.
I'll assume you want to keep the Ampeg cab. Since it is less than ideal, you'll need to make up for it in other ways. I'd rule the PF500 out. I own it myself and I think it's great, but I don't play metal anymore. It would be a contender if you had a sealed cab, but with your HLF (I use the 610hlf) it'll be too muddy and uncontrolled in the low end.
The D800 is a great head, and would compliment metal well. It has a more pleasing overdrive tone than the other two. Again, the cab can make this head seem too deep and loose in the low end.
The GK is the tightest sounding head of the 3, even with the 410hlf. It has a very clean, usable tone. The boost stuff wouldn't be beneficial for metal, where tight, articulate notes are almost necessity.
Regardless of the choice, to get the most out of the cab, you really should have a high pass filter, such as the Fdeck hpf. Clipping off the lower end bass will be a tremendous benefit to cutting through the mix. It sounds counterintuitive to remove bass frequencies from the bass guitar, but it's a very successful tool.
If it's 80-85# (rather than 110#) -- does that invalidate my point? They are not 110 pounds, more like 80-85, and have been for many years now.
A little, because the heavier ones have the scooped sound while the newer ones have vastly improved the mid response and toned down the flubby low end.If it's 80-85# (rather than 110#) -- does that invalidate my point?
Well, not the way you describe its sound (a description I think is accurate), but the higher weight is no longer accurate, and has not been for many years. If it's 80-85# (rather than 110#) -- does that invalidate my point?
And as long as you're carrying a 110# 4x10 cab (putting a micro on top of that cab is like ordering a diet Coke with your bacon double cheeseburger) you might as well look at some of the traditional-powered bass amps like the GK 1001RBII and the Mesa Carbine
The redesign is definitely relevant to the question of mid scoop, but my point was more that I find it silly when people schlep a 75 lb. cabinet, and then fret about whether their amp weighs 4 lbs, or 6 lbs...then place that 4-6 lb. amp on top of their speaker cabinet while hanging an 8-9 lb. bass on their shoulder.A little, because the heavier ones have the scooped sound while the newer ones have vastly improved the mid response and toned down the flubby low end.
