cant pick an envelope filter. help!

I've owned 3 FX25's, 2 90's dark-green metallic and one with the blend knob. I took the one with the extra knob back the next day, doesn't do the SWOOOOOSH trick at all. The other two (one of which I still own) are the epitome of what I look for in an envelope filter. Huge low end sound (you have to run a compressor after this pedal) and the top end is sweet. Very easy to work. One of the cheapest on the market. To me-- a no brainer. I may buy another envelope filter one day for different sounds, but the FX25 will always be a mainstay on my board.

seems like the most loved pedal is the DOD. of the fx25 users out there, who uses a compressor and who doesent? does it go before or after the filter?


i dont have a compressor, but if i need one to tame this monster i think the EBS compressor will do fine..correct..?

The EBS is indeed an awesome compressor, but you might want one that acts as a limiter to tame a resonant envelope filter. Having said that, I haven't tried and FX25B yet, so the EBS may do the job.

If you need a general duty compressor, the EBS is hard to beat.

After if you are trying to tame the peaks.

It goes after the filter, because you want your full dynamic range going into it to control the filter opening up, and you want the compressor to regulate the volume spikes that the resonance of the filter produces. If you look back at post #36 I listed several comps that I recommend for this specific task. The EBS is great for other purposes, but not ideal as a peak limiter.

The difference in how the Tweaktronics sounds from one clip to another could just be the way I played dynamically or the bass I used. Most of the filters I've tried have a huge range of sounds just based on the signal they receive.

That's pretty much what I was thinking. That's why it's nice to hear them all side by side, same bass, same mood, etc. Filters are so much fun the way they respond. My Zoom's filter was not as responsive as the Q-tron like that. It pretty much always sounded the same.

Yeah and only $99 too. I actually like it more than the Bottom Feeder I had. The Bottom feeder cut lows or boosted highs a little and made my tone to bright. Don't get me wrong I almost kept it because it was usable and I did like it but it was redundant with the other stuff I have.

I'd give it a try first. I don't use a limiter after and there's some spikes, but I've always found them to be manageable. You might want one, but I don't think that its absolutley essential.

Sorry to here that you have had trouble with EHX in the past, Seem's odd? I have palyed their pedals for about 9 or 10 years and only had the Russian SmallStone go bad, sent it to New York for a cheap repair and she is back in action. I have the original big Q Tron and the HAZ reissue Mutron III+ and the Q Tron blows it out of the water. The Q Tron is loud and juicy and cuts thru the mix in a live band situation all day long. Go with one for sure!!

Neither, apparently. But, then again, I have a Q-Tron. And it's the envelope filter you want, if you want a Mu-Tron III sound, and not a Mu-Tron III price. Mike Beigel designed the Q-Tron to be the direct descendant of the Mu-Tron III, which he also designed. The same kid with two different women, I suppose.

I'm disappointed nobody's mentioned the Tonefactor / Mojo Hand 442 Analogue Filter, now the Boomstick Bottom Feeder. I've got a second hand one of these in the mail after hearing it was one of the best filters out there - any votes for this one?
