cant pick an envelope filter. help!

hmmm..choices..choices...
the lovetone meatball is out of the question. doesent sound like what i want it too, its way over complicated, and lets be real, its just too expencive.
the Q tron seems to be loved by all, but like i said before i've got beef with EHX and their crappy reliability..and it is definately a little more complicated than neccesary. but up the up side it is probobly the most mutron-like filter out there.
the DOD FX25 sound clips in the soundclip database sound real sweet and funky and low end friendly. plus theyre on ebay for like $40 (!?!?!) but it does seem like its stricly one sound. id like a little more tweaking if possible..
the maxon AF-9 i cant find any samples of. can someone hook me up? it seems like its the perfect middle of the road. looks like its tweakable but not really complicated..im really hoping it can get down and groove all wet and funky-like.
and the EBS bass IQ for whatever reason i dont like. it seems like the filter opens/closes at the end of each phrase, not each note. (if you disagree, please, sound sample it up!)
so right now im hoping to find some real nice samples of the maxon, then ill go try one and hopefully itll live up to what i expect..and is it also true bypass?

The EBS works just dandy with my Laklands (all Bart PUPs/electronics), my Guild Pilot (EMP active PUPs with passive EQ/Volume), my mongrel fretless (Duncan 1/4 Pounder P/J passive feeding the Duncan/Bailey Fundemental Fretless pre-amp) as well as it does with my passive P bass, the Sting, and the varioius Jazz bass clones I used it with.

Good choice, in my studio I have 3 filters (Mutron III, DOD FX25, Meatball) all diy clones of course =D. The DOD FX25 is often the one I find myself reaching for.
I have a Q-tron and a DOD fx 25, both are cool but I think a look into the Chunk Systems Agent 00 Funk, it is my favorite filter right now.
Hmm, that's not a complaint I've heard about the Maxon. I thought it was pretty wet sounding myself, but then I didn't spend a lot of time with it. From my experience though it was fairly comparable to the DOD FX25. Not that they sound the same, but both are categorized in my mind as big, warm, wet filters. By warm I mean less "quacky" sounding with a "fatter" envelope. But if quacky is what you want, then I'd look into the QTron.
I hope that makes sense, as I find it very hard to describe sounds (particularly filters) in words, especially finding terms that can explain differences without making them seem like criticisms. To be clear, I don't think "quacky" is a bad thing. Just a different type of tone.
+1 The Q-tron is very wet and quacky. You can literally make it sound like popping bubbles
i have a dodfx25 and a maxon af9, both are great pedals. you can do a little more with the maxon, but theyre both great at what they do
did a little bit more looking into the Qtron and its just not for me. yes very quacky and funky, but the DOD just sounds so much bigger. im also probobly going to get the chunk systems synth pedal thatll have the circuit from the 00funk in it, so that can give me the more bubbly mutron (or qtron) kind of sounds.

Yeah, its a good choice. Either of them are really, but you won't be dissapointed with a DOD, especially for the price they go for. Mine was $40 from memory.
Although it gets a bad rep for not being the original Mutron, the HAZ Mutron III+ is a nice filter that retains your bottom end and can get a nice variety of tones. Much more affordable than the original too.
Not that im saying the Haz isn't a good filter, but its basically a shell re-issue and thats about it. The internals are different for a start. Haz call them upgrades, but that basically translates to 'different'.
They definately sound quite different to each other (IMO). I just wanted to point that out in case someone decides to jump on a Haz reissue thinking they are getting something like an original Mutron.
You know, one filter I've never even considered trying is the Haz Mutron, primarily because of the low esteem which it is generally held in here on TB. Sometimes I wonder if they had given it a different name and housing if it would have fared better. As I said, I've never played one so I can't say if the actual filter is any good, but I wonder how much of the criticism of it comes from comparisons with the real McCoy.
No one mentioned the moogerfooger yet? The Moog MF 101 LP Envelope filter is sweet. A little spendy, and you may need a bypass looper, but I haven't heard anything like it.
I Like the Guyatone Ultron. It's expensive, but versatile. It has an LFO onboard, up and down modes, tap tempo, foot pedal control, LP, HP, BP, and a bunch of other features.
For simple plug and play, the EBS BassIQ is hard to beat.

Like I said, im not having a direct stab at the Haz mutron. Personally I don't like it a great deal, but im sure it has its fans. To me its not very wet and bubbly sounding.
However, the fact that it does have the same name and housing, certainly doesn't help.
