I'll add that in addition to the Qtron+, I have the EHX Bassballs as well. It's a totally different sounding unit and I really like it as well. If asked why two envelope filters, I'd compare it to using a Precision and a Music Man. They're both basses and will do the job but have totally different vibes.
The problem with the BassBalls (and this may be why some folks don't like 'em) is that it's VERY finicky with how hard it's driven. You have to hit the "sweet spot", both level- and tone-wise, to get the really vowel like effects it's great for and if ya get excited and start hitting the strings a bit hard you lose the sound.
