My new Powered Pedal Board!
It's Spring Break and I'm off all week NO SCHOOL YAY!
Dad just got done setting up my new pedal board (I helped by putting the velcro on the pedals, he wired it up!) which was gifted to me by a YouTube fan who doesn't want his name revealed, he said last time he did that 1000 people spammed him asking for free stuff.
I did mention all my pedals were in disarray and falling off my amp (I don't use them on the ground, they would be in the way) and he saw my setup and how many pedals I had and got me the right size so I can add 2-3 more pedals depending on how wide they are.
STRICH Guitar Pedal Board with Built-in Power Supply, Pedal Board 18 x 11" Lightweight 2.65lb Aluminum Alloy, PedalBoard with Pedal Cables, Bag, Hook Loop Strips PB-S18
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0F4QCKD46
See all the blue lights, those are pigtails to each pedal for power with the red one at the end the converter that plugs into the wall. You can put all the cables under the board so they aren't in the way. The velcro is VERY strong, I could barely pull one off in the wrong place! It also comes with a case big enough you can just put the assembled pedalboard with all the pedals on it, hooked up, and just plug the bass and amp into each end. Well, and the chorus and MuTron also go into my Fender Rumble's effects loop.
So now my pedals are no longer in disarray.
Yesterday
All my pedals were in disarray
Now I've found a place to make them stay
Think I'll use, my Yestertray

Long Live R&R/Rainbow bass by Cara

This song came really naturally to me, it just kind of flows. I learned it yesterday and was rehearsing it today and I thought "I can record this now" and pulled it off in 2 takes. It's a really straightforward rocker with the same structure of pulloffs and connecting parts throughout. Most of the bass lines on the album were performed by Blackmore himself, as he fired original bassist Mark Clarke during the recording sessions due to dissatisfaction with his playing style. Blackmore only brought in Bob Daisley for bass on specific tracks, including "Gates of Babylon," "Kill the King," and "Sensitive to Light," but not the title track.

Great job as always.
It figures Blackmore could tear up the bass as well as guitar.
You've clearly learned a lot of songs. Do you revisit them all regularly to retain them?

Now and then. Sometimes I redo them, sometimes I go back and try singing them. They are all here: cararickbass, about 300 now

Lucky Guy from Hermit of Mink Hollow (1978)/Todd Rundgren w/ bass, bass arrangement & vocals by Cara

Rundgren's arrangement has no bass guitar, so once again I had to compose one. I tried to take different voicings than just roots, when you are matching chords and melodies there are so many ways you can branch off and go with the bass melody, I tried to go with harmonies and little melodies, ala John Deacon especially, so this is my take of how John might have played it in the unlikely event Todd had asked Queen's bass player to lay down a track.

This is from Todd's 8th LP "Hermit of Mink Hollow" (1978) where he recorded his album Hermit of Mink Hollow at his home studio on Mink Hollow Road in Lake Hill, New York, near Woodstock, where Rundgren lived and worked in isolation during the late 1970s. He recorded the entire album himself, playing all instruments and handling production, living alone like a "hermit" creating this introspective, piano-driven work.

The downside of doing a very counterpoint type bassline is then I have to sing with it, which ups the level of difficulty. This is only partially in my key so I have to jump octaves on different part. Anyway, I'm pretty happy with it and if Todd ever hears it I hope he likes it 🙂

That very much is in John's vein, and fits the song while making it a bit different.

Come on Eileen vocals/Save Ferris bass & vocals by Cara

I haven't posted here in quite a while because I gave up on the place because it was so dead. But here's a video you might like I did tonight and this page came up so here you go, please let me know what you think!

Come on Eileen vocals/Save Ferris bass & vocals by Cara
(original vocals and bass removed and replaced by Cara with Moises.ai)

This is the Ska version, with brass instead of fiddles and traditional celtic instruments like accordion from the original Dexy's Midnight Runners version. It's a lot more aggressive, fast and heavy and especially it features Monique Powell, who is the only original member remaining in the current lineup.

BTW when I was last here I had about 350 vids of songs I learned by ear, no tabs, no sheets, no tutorials on my Youtube channel. Now I have nearly 700!
cararickbass of all genres and styles, check my nearly 100 playlists set up by bands, complete albums and music genres: cararickbass And my full album and feature with commentary vids cararickext

Monique Powell – original replaced vocal track
Brian Mashburn – guitar, vocals, piano, organ
Bill Uechi – original replaced bass track
Marc Harismendy – drums
Eric Zamora – alto saxophone
José Castellaños – trumpet

Great work as usual! And you have a cool, unique voice.

Thank you! Here's another:
Long Distance Runaround vocals/YES bass & vocals by Cara on Rickenbacker w/ pick and Rotosound Roundwounds!
(original bass and lead vocals removed)

full version:

just bass version

Difficult song to master, so many licks and diverse parts it's easy to lose focus and hit a clam, and although I learned this months ago, adding vocals adds a whole new level of difficulty! But, I'm beginning to really get Chris Squire's fills now and it feels like a real move up from the Beatles/Queen stuff I was doing!

Written by lead singer Jon Anderson, (about his uncomfortable ambivalent attitude towards organized religion) the song was released as a B-side to "Roundabout", but became a surprise hit in its own right as a staple of album-oriented rock radio. On Fragile it segues into "The Fish (Schindleria Praematurus)".

More and more fun all the time! Next are Yours is no Disgrace (already have the bass down), Onward, hard to figure out with all the overtones but I think I got it, without the "Rickenbacker Kiss", and Tempus Fugit, probably the hardest Squire bassline I've attempted.

Beer vocals/Reel Big Fish bass & vocals by Cara bass play along

This one took longer than many others, I got hung up even on the harmonics but skipped this and did More Than a Feeling and got the feeling for harmonics. Still, very busy bassline to sing with and it may not be apparent but it's changing nearly every line or going up an octave.

I have one more Ska song I want to do then I'm on to some new stuff.

So shout out to my ska buddies!

MORE SKA!! Take On Me vocals/Reel Big Fish bass & vocals by Cara

[Cara wipes the original lead vocals and bass but preserves the backing vocals for her version]

I first did this instrumentally 10 months ago according to YoutTube but I met some friends who are in SKA bands and I've been doing a lot lately or adding vocals to the ones I already did.

This is a really cool upbeat version of the old A-ha song, which I already liked but this is more high-energy and with shredding guitars and, of course, BRASS OUT THE A** The bass is moderatelly difficult, mostly just that it doesn't synch in any way with the vocals, without singing I had no problemo playing it 8 months ago

So shout out to my ska buddies!

MORE SKA!!!!!!!!!!!! One Step Beyond, Our House, Welcome to the House of Fun
all great Madness basslines!

One Step Beyond/Madness bass by Cara

It's kind of fun, all instrumental and mostly bass runs and a sax solo.
Written by Jamaican ska singer Prince Buster, Madness did this with intro lines taken from about 5 different Ska songs. According to Alan Winstanley, one of the producers, the released Madness version was a rough mix, created by taking the original 1 minute 10 second instrumental and repeating it!!

This is the 2nd in my Madness trilogy, a really fun song not too hard to play, you just have to hit all the accents! This one Suggs actually sings. I have one more Madness song for later this week.

Welcome to the House of Fun/Madness bass by Cara

This is the 3rd in my trilogy of Madness songs, with Our House & One Step Beyond:
This was a lot more difficult than it might seem at first, like a dozen different licks and not just the same lick in different positions, but each one unique run. The timing on the break is also odd and takes some work. But all in all, pretty fun, I hope you like it!

THE BEST HEAVY METAL GUITAR SOLO EVER! Sails of Charon/Scorpions bass by Cara

This has some fast licks on bass and guitar and is in an interesting mode. The guitar solo, composed and performed by Uli Jon Roth, is built on Phrygian mode (with a lowered second degree) and harmonic minor, which together give it an dark, Arabic sound (See I know some theory!). Same mode as Gates of Babylon/Rainbow I did a few months ago

In my opinion, it's the best heavy metal lead guitar solo of all time, fast, fluent, exotic sounding. The use of these modes was groundbreaking in heavy metal at the time, influencing Yngwie Malmsteen and even the great Ritchie Blackmore and started an entire genre of metal.

I used Dad's BC RICH Mockingbird on this, as I do on a lot of metal songs, because of it's built in pre-amp and DeMarzio pickups, Run through the Marshall 100w Lead Amp you see on my right, like Bob Daisley on Blizzard & Diary, with my JOYO Monomyth distortion/speaker emulator/sound shaper and EQ give it a big beefy monster bass sound. It reminds me of Tom Peterson's 12 string on In Color. Anyway, really proud of this one, I think it really came out nice and the licks are crisp and clear.

It's funny to me that I rejected piano, as I was a HUGE Elton John fan as a child. But I was always listening to the bass part, noticing how it seemed to set up the chord changes in Elton's ballads
Dee Murray was such a great bassist. He could handle anything Elton and Bernie threw at him. I went to the same high school (so did Amy Winehouse but none of us in the same decade).
