Love Her Madly/Door bass by Cara

I don't generally like the Doors, but I love this song! Other than the opening riffs A C E A and D F# A D all the rest of the riffs are different and every one kills! That's Elvis' touring bassist Jerry Scheff, who Elvis asked to teach him bass. Scheff also played on a ton of other records. The Doors didn't have a bass player, the keyboard player Ray Manzarek used his left hand and his organ pedals on most of their albums, but on LA Woman they brought in Scheff and he really killed it on this song! This took me a while to get down, it was pretty tough but I finally got it!

I always loved that bass line. Great job.

Way to go on being cognizant on the importance of your vocal chops.

The amount of guitarists I have played with that don't spend any time trying to improve their vocals is staggering! They work on guitar yes, but seem clueless to putting in time to improve their singing.
My Dad was a lead guitarist and he and the other lead guitarist cared nothing for vocals, they sang backing vocals but didn't really care, they were all about soloes. Then, in the middle of a tour the singer quit and by necessity he got stuck doing the lead vocals and was the vocalist for the rest of the time they played. A similar thing happened to him on bass!

I've caught a lot of flack on TB for this statement, but I'll say it again:

I'd rather hear an average band with a great vocalist than a great band with an average vocalist.

I’d rather hear a band where everyone in it is exceptional. I still pay more attention to the instrumentalists, though.
Also, decades of singing contest shows have burnt me out on overly histrionic vocalists.
Speaking of great bands, Lake Street Dive were on Colbert the other night, a perfect example of fantastic vocals and musicianship.
I’ve been in love with their bassist Bridget Kearney since I first heard them.

This band was an all original band, as my Dad says at the beginning, this was the only cover tune they did, "an old Sweet number called ACTION!" My Dad is on bass and lead vocals. You can barely hear them, but they have 3 part vocals going on there, great band! He's playing his '81 BC RICH Mockingbird, which I play sometimes on my vids :)

That sounded like Sweet, allright! I Kept expecting the chorus from “Ballroom Blitz”!
I had a BC Rich Bodine bass back when I was a pup. 😁 it was a temporary diversion from Rickenbacker.

Looks like a BC RICH Eagle/ More on Bodine/Eagle/Seagull B.C. Rich Eagle
That song they are playing is "Action" or "Everybody Wants a Piece of the Action" with parts of "Hellraiser" thrown in

The eagle was essentially the same body shape. The Bodine had rectangular pickups instead of P bass style pickups.
It was a nice bass, but i hungered for another Rickenbacker like I’d had before.

My Dad had/has a Mockingbird guitar, Rich Bich, Ironbird, Warlock, Mockingbird bass - These are all his, he let one of his guitarists play them because he switched to bass live- he never even played the Warlock live himself.

Stay With Me/Rod Stewart & Faces bass by Cara

This is another song my Dad's band used to play, he said they used it for a night ender a lot, or a 2nd set ender then AGAIN at the end of the 4th set, everyone was too drunk or tired to know but everybody danced and it has that big ending.

O my heavens, so many licks, nothing hardly repeats, even stuff that sounds like it repeats has a different tag at the end, took about 2 hours to learn by ear and days to get it down and record. I seem to be doing songs with a LOT of bass movement lately! I have 2 more coming up too!

Written jointly by lead singer Rod Stewart and guitarist Ronnie Wood (who later joined the Stones and is there to this day) and played by bassist Ronnie Lane "2 guys named Ronnie in the same band? Confusing. How about you go by Ronald and you Ron?" but anyway fun song, hilarious lyrics: "with a face like that you got nothing to laugh about" Rod proposes a one night stand with a groupie on the condition she be OUT OF THERE in the morning or he'll kick her out. But he will spring for cab fare. From the band's third studio album A Nod Is As Good As a Wink... to a Blind Horse (1971)

Kenney Jones, who would later replace Keith Moon in the Who plays drums.

Cosmik Debris/Zappa bass by Cara

Very difficult to play! took me 4 days of my practice time to get it good enough to record.

This song is just lick after lick, hardly any gaps! Lots of movement, lots of difference licks, lots of timing changes! This took days to get down after I figured it out by ear. This song is from what is arguably Zappa's most famous album, the 1974 LP Apostrophe.

It concerns the Mystery Man, a typical guru or psychic, offering to help the narrator reach Nervanna [sic] for a "nominal service charge," and the narrator's refusal to buy into his act, "Look here, brother, who you jiving with that cosmik debris?" When the Mystery Man gets pushy, Zappa as the narrator tells how he snatched the crystal ball all away from him, hypnotized the Mystery Man, stole his belongings and his old lady and blew his mind. We never learn if it is indeed a real poncho or a Sears' poncho.

Tom Fowler, Zappa bassist '73-'75 played bass on this track. He played on the albums: Over-Nite Sensation (1973)Apostrophe (’) (1974)Roxy & Elsewhere (1974)One Size Fits All (1975)Bongo Fury (1975)and left the band in '75 due to a hand injury.

Jessica/Allman Brothers bass by Cara
full version:

Another one from Brothers and Sisters, my fav album of theirs even though Duane is gone! This is another one with a ton of variations on a lot of licks, but fun to play, has a really cool shuffle beat and country swing to it. I took out the piano and guitar solos because it was just too long for a posted videos, my analysis stats show most people barely last a minute, let alone 6 so I got it down to a manageble 3mins.
Another great Berry Oakley joint!

Aqualung/Jethro Tull bass by Cara

Full version:

I did this about a year ago and I recently ran across it here on YouTube and it was just not up to snuff so I redid it and deleted the old one. This has an iconic guitar riff, the bass actually plays harmony to part of it, and does a really unique walking part on the rest. Loads of fun! and what a great band he has.

Berry is one of my bass inspirations.
Interesting to hear Berry’s lines with a Chris Squirish tone.

We Are the Champions vocals/Queen vocals & bass by Cara

Very difficult bassline to begin with, then trying to sing Freddie's vocals on top of that, extra level of difficulty! I challenge any bass player to try it!!!!I often see bass players covering Queen, but none playing bass AND singing! Prove me wrong fellas, give it a try!
