Thanks for your comments! I dig the black blocks too. Overall, it looks pretty good, despite a few blemishes. You can't see it in the photo, but there's a small chunk of wood missing from the heel of the body, which probably resulted from a fall. Yes, it's a passive bass and as far as I know it's totally stock. I had to re-solder the wire to the tone pot, but otherwise, I have not altered it in any way. The action is great. I've never even had to make a seasonal truss rod adjustment, so it's always ready to play!

Hi all, this is my baby, it really sounds great. i bought it two months ago but he is here to stay, i hope you like it. does anyone has idea of the year this bass was made? it has a serial number of six digits and it says made in japan, steel adjustable plate in the back plate, any info will be great, thank you :)

Hi. Congrats on the bass! A piece of vintage history!

Since it's made in Japan, that's an older CB bass, during they period where most people considered them well made instruments.
Now, they are a different animal. I don't know much about them. I know there are other threads here on TB regarding the older
CB basses.

Let me know if you want a member #.

thanks, i am really in love with this bass, sounds great. i had a gibson ripper when i was young, i was really in love with that one but this bass is not so far in sound and feel from the original. i am very proud to have it :)

Very glad to hear it! As far as I know, Carlo Robelli basses were made up until the 70's (possibly 80's) in Japan and were considered quite nice and somewhat collectible.
In the 2000's, the name because the "House Brand" for Sam Ash music stores, a large U.S. music retailer. At that point they were considered much lower quality.
I and many other still love them and consider them great basses.

the duct tape security sticker on the back goes over the soundhole when "live", cuts feedback down, kinda damps the top.
Was a righty, but Ive had my way with it

Was able to get the action quite comfortable
The bridge is always slanted the wrong way for intonation, but its playable up to the 13 or 14 fret, which is more than enough

Ive had it for 10 or 11 years. Bought it new. man, it was on the cheap side, but I cant remember how much, maybe $200. I hadnt yet moved to LA permanently, and wanted to stash something here so I didnt have to fly with one. Being a lefty, I had hoped to find a left handed AEB , but sadly one wasnt showing itself. I dont even remember where I got it, but I had them make a lefty nut and left with it. After a year the neck got a huge bow, so I unloaded the strings, weighted it the other direction and applied truss rod and bent it back into shape over the course of a month. That was years ago. 8 years ago it was one of 2 main basses in the band Big Bone Lick.

I just recently revisited the truss rod and sanded the gloss of the back of the neck. The action is quite low for an AEB now, and fun to play. The extra holes you see in the sides, from relocating the preamp and jack give it a bit of extra acoustic oomph.

Wow, rufus.K, I admire and appreciate the effort you've put into making this a good, fun, playable bass! Most people would have just thrown it away.

I'm always happy when the CR basses "save the day"! I enjoyed your video, as well. Thanks for sharing!
