Carvin B1500 club

My B1500 has been my primary gig rig for several years now; I'd like to be included.

For those of you who are interested, BassGear magazine (issue #2) provided a graphic showing the settings that come closest to providing "flat" frequency response. I find the magazine image a little hard to read, but here's what the settings look like to me:

30 Hz Sub-bass 6.5 (1:30 o'clock)
100 Hz Bass 3 (10:00 o'clock)
300 Hz Low Mid 7 (2:00 o'clock)
1 kHz Mid 4 (11:00 o'clock)
3 kHz Hi Mid 5 (noon)
10 kHz Treble 4 (11:00 o'clock)
Drive 0 (fully counter-clockwise)

Man it would be nice to find out what flat is with the drive at noon. Anyone have that?

Not that flat in any way will work for every gig, just good to know where flat is with the drive at 12:00.

According to the BassGear review, increasing the Drive control from fully counterclockwise to the noon position increases gain while introducing subtle harmonic content; from noon to fully clockwise, harmonic content becomes more gritty and conspicuous. I don't recall any mention of the drive control changing frequency response, just increasing gain and distortion. When I play an active bass with my B1500's active/passive switch in the passive position, and dime the drive control, I can create clearly audible distortion when I dig into the strings; when I pluck lightly, however, distortion is too subtle to hear with the rest of the band playing.

What I would like to know, and didn't see in the article, is the effect of the drive control on SPL, i.e., with all of the other controls left alone, how much SPL attenuation should one expect with the drive control at minimum relative to SPL with the drive control at maximum? To my ears, the change in SPL is significant, but I haven't attempted to measure the difference.
 
FWIW, when changing the drive setting I don't hear any difference in frequency balance, just differences in harmonic content/distortion, and gain.

That's a good point. I guess I should have said, "It would be interested to see if the truly flat EQ setting changes at all with different Drive settings." :)

EDIT: Not that I'm longing for a truly flat EQ, but it is interesting to know how the preamps are voiced in different amps.

Just an fyi ... the flat settings given in the Bass Gear mag review actually don't produce much of a different plot than just everything at noon. Look at the plots in the article ... tiny differences. The B1500 with all controls at noon is very close to flat.

Sounds pretty good that way to my ears. I find it safe to start with all of the knobs pointing straight up and tweak as needed for each venue/cabinet pairing. I usually end up reducing the bass by an "hour" or two; it's the sub-bass control that I seem to adjust the most when compensating for venue/speaker interaction.
