CARVIN BASS VS PEAVEY BASS.

I have 2 Carvin 6 strings for sale... great basses, never played a peavey other than my t40, but as a long time carvin fan I can assure these are very fine instruments... PM if you are interested in pics of the basses, they are not on the for sale forum.
Just a data point...
I own an LB76 (late 90's, 2-band, double-J's) and got to play my first Cirrus 6 in a shop today. I've been eyeing the Cirrus as a possible change but never actually played one. After today, I won't be changing anytime soon. Between these two particular instruments I like the Carvin better in every way - scale, neck, overall tone, and especially low B performance. The Cirrus low B was pretty disappointing. It was nicer looking though

Mine has the best low B I have ever played and that includes my Roscoe LG 3005 so I would think that the one you played had some issue such as dead strings for instance.
The OP said he wanted a bass that did not have distinctive sound. I think Carvin electronics would deliver that more effectively.
+1. Most Carvins are kind of "generic" sounding, and I don't mean that as a slam. The Cirrus has more of a tight, detailed sound. I prefer the Cirrus if there's room in the mix for its wider sonic footprint, but the more traditional sound of the Carvin might work better in rock or dense mixes, giving it a little more versatility in that respect.
Don't get me wrong, the Cirrus is also a versatile bass and the electronics are powerful enough to get you an "unobtrusive" tone. I used to use my Cirrus for everything but I've found that in a rock mix with guitars I'm better served by Fenders or basses that sound like them. YMMV.
I agree with the above poster, that HAS to be a string or setup issue. I don't doubt your Carvin has a great low B. But comparing my Cirrus with my Carvin side-by side with the same strings, my Cirrus's B is far more detailed and articulate.

String issue: I doubt it. The strings looked new, and the rest of them sounded okay.
Setup issue: possibly; I didn't play with any adjustment. Nothing obviously wrong with the setup as far as I could tell.
Low B was far from detailed and articulate. But I'll keep an open mind on these and certainly try others if I get the chance.

I have a 34" Carvin and a 35.25" Carvin and both have great B strings. I'd go with Carvin but I'm biased 
Go with the Peavey. Carvin uses brittle truss rods and bland electronics. The Peaveys have better necks and better tone, IMO. Every time I pick up a Cirrus, the bass just sings and plays almost effortlessly. Carvins have not fared as well.

Carvin switched to a much better truss rod system in 2005, I think. The old style system did feel quite fragile. The truss rod in my SB5000 feels very, very sturdy.
The modern Carvin electronics, especially the J99a pickups are a massive improvement, too. They're great sounding jazz bass pickups, if that's the sound you're going for.
As of late, I'm starting to GAS for an LB75 with HH pickups. I'd probably go with the 34" scale model, though. I have both a 34" and 35" 5-string, and I kind of like a 'looser' B string...it just sounds more thunderous in a way.
Having never played a Carvin... I'll have to side with the Cirrus on this one... I love mine to death =D
I've already said I also favor the Cirrus. But I can vouch for the superiority of Carvin's new electronics over the old ones. I played a couple of basses with the J99as and the new preamps and they sounded significantly better than the old stuff, my BB76 included.
