Carvin LB75 ressurection

Just arrived here today.......A beautiful old Wal....with a broken truss rod! We took it in as a "patient" because hardly anyone else would. Jeremy is going to do most of the surgery, with me supervising and advising. I'll do a full thread documenting it, to add to my library of scary truss rod replacement job threads.

Should be an interesting time:thumbsup:. Maybe within the Luthiers Corner someone (attention moderators:cool:) might compile these extreme repair threads for all to reference?:hyper:

Most of my truss rod replacement threads are over in the Hardware, Setup & Repair section because they are, after all, repair work. Many have "Scary Repairs" in the title, and they all have "Truss Rod Replacement in a (Brand)" in the title. That way they turn up easily in a search. The title of a thread is important in making it easy to find later.

Yes but I thinking of the more in-depth work like this where it transcends repair work. Matters not to me either way.

I've contemplated sometimes buying one of the "factory buyout" items from Guitar Fetish but usually when I do the math it doesn't really work out -- even assuming I won the gamble and got something that's not terminally water damaged, a >$100 base price can be unrealistic for the amount of work, and material that has to go into it. In the past I've seen MTDs, Spectors, higher-end ESPs and Ibanezes there, so it sure has been tempting at times. There have been some items with fancy wood tops there that could cost a hobbyist hundred or more just as a raw slab. But if you've got to saw right through it to remove an irredeemably warped thru-neck, was it worth the money...

Although now that I'm ranting, I see that they've cut their usual prices on most of the listings -- IIRC the claimed "original price" had usually been around $150-200 with actual selling around $80-150, but as I write this most items are $50-100. And they've got a bunch of Gibsons. Or "Gibsons". So maybe there are decent deals now. It's hard to tell.

I know I'm commenting a thread from 2022, but I just found it, linked in another thread. Holy moly. I read the entire thread in one sitting....first time any long thread interested me that much. Absolutely incredible and inspiring work. Gives me hope for the Peavey Grind5 truss rod I've been trying to get up the nerve to tackle. VERY much appreciated!
There’s the point…to show what can be done and inspire others to give it a go.
