Why you think they look suspicious? This bass is a keeper, its not going back. It's a lot of bass for the money. It sounds awesome.

Carvin SB5000 / SB4000 Roll Call...Part 2!

Ok guys so i have a question, im really thinking of placing an order for one of these bad boys. I want the 4000 but heres my issue i been a fender j player for years and i hear the neck is wider than a fender j and im concerned i wont like the neck profile.
What would be great is if any of you guys that switched from a fender J to the Sb 4000 chime in, did you have to get used to the neck or was it very comfortable and natural feeling?
I hate P bass necks and really was hoping for a thin nice J neck profile. Thijs is honestly the only thing holding me back from pulling the trigger on one of the beautys.

I understand now why the inlays on my bass look suspicious, but that doesn't really bother me. The bass sound awesome and beautiful. I cant stop playing it since I got it, even at when I don't have an amp.
Sorry, am I the only pervy headcase to find that particular inlay suspicious looking? Nevermind that, the bass looks awesome.
Say Jheake, I think the SB4000 neck is modeled after Seku Bunch's favorite 70s era Jazz bass.

I have played mostly Jazz basses for the last 20 years and recently tried the sb4000 and purchased an sb5000. The 4000 neck is definitely chunkier than most Jazz basses i've played on. While it's not a P neck it's like a narrow jazz neck with a P neck depth or something. The good news is you can always send the bass back if you don't like it for a full refund within 10 days.

I live in phoenix az so its about a 5+ hour drive. I figure im gonna get one i just want to know if 4000's neck is too chunky and the 5000's neck is just right then ill just get the 5. Seems people like the 5 better than the 4 sometimes.
i just like narrow thin necks, a little bit wider wont bother me so much as long as its very thin. I have smaller hands.

I wish Carvin had a shop out east (NYC or Boston perhaps?). I'd gladly make a 5 hour trek to try out all the Carvin models. Sigh...
So Jon, will you be checking out some neck-thru models to compare to the SBs? Care to give us a little A/B/C/D...etc. testing reviews? Will you be bringing along a digital cam? Yeah, pretty demanding request coming from a complete stranger but I figured I throw it out there just in case you'd be into it.

I know this is probably posted somewhere but from the samples I have heard so far - I cant find much difference between the stack pickups and the single coils - I HATE hum... and I was thinking about getting the stacks but I wanted to get some info on that if anyone could throw their 2 cents in.

If the SB5000 naturally balances on the strap with the headstock in an upright position, like yours, I'm impressed!
I went to the Carvin store in San Diego last week and played a fretless SB5000 (without a strap), and was impressed! The ebony fingerboard appeared to have been dyed, and the G-string was significantly brighter than the other strings, but I liked it.
If you don't mind me asking, what kind of wood is your bass body made from, and how much does it weigh?

Regarding the balance, I had no problem with it, especially with the upper body. I had it going through my LittleMark II head, with 2 Aguilar GS112 cabs. The tone?......I'm speechless.

Well, I grew up playing US Fender Jazz basses and still own one but generally switched to Music Man Sterling basses because I too have small hands and like thin comfortable necks. The Sterlings, in my view are even better than the Fender Jazz basses for pure comfort and reducing fatigue. If you really want a thin neck in a J-Bass style, the SB4000 isn't the way to go. Consider a Lakland Joe Osborn which is especially tapered at first position and is extremly confortable (or try a Sterling or a Stingray SLO Special).
I got a SB4000 about 2 weeks ago. It's beautiful in every respect, light, very well-balanced, and souds killer. However, it is not a really thin neck. The nut width is slightly wider than 1.5 J-Standard and the neck thickness is definitely chunkier. I even got mine with the optional 10" radius and clear satin on back of neck options to help on this front. I must admit, in my first practice with it, my hand did get somewhat fatigued after a while. Same with my first 75 min gig. It wasn't horrible and I'll get used to it, but it's truly not a super-thin neck for small-handed, short-armed players. Just keeping it real here.
Still an awesome bass and I'm keeping it. But, given all of the options available, it would be nice for a "thin" version of the neck to be offered.
