Carvin SB5000 / SB4000 Roll Call...Part 2!

I definitely prefer the SB5000!

Yeah, no matter what trick I try to pull, I always prefer my SB5000 in the end too. Trying to decide whether to take the SB5001 to practice this weekend or not.

Things can look good, and sound good; and that relationship has nothing to do with my personal level of talent.
Or, lack thereof.

Aesthetics are not disposable, and are part of what makes a work of art.

It really cracks me up to see some of these post about what the SB bass looks like! Are we bassist or fashion show contestants? I question the ability to play of some of these people who are harping on a headstock or body style. A good bassist can an will play anything that sounds good and plays well thats why he gets work and a poor workman blames his tools!

You know, I would agree with this sentiment if those folks could actually PLAY one of these before they spend their money - but as 99% of folks can only buy Carvins without playing them, I'd have to say that how a bass looks DOES matter. If something you can't hear or play doesn't appeal to you visually, why in the world would you ever buy it? On rumor/reputation alone? That I have played several of these now and can honestly say that they are very nice basses is nothing compared to actually playing/hearing the bass live.

We have explained how it sounds we have posted clips and done everything a 1000 post thread can possibly do and people are talking about headstocks, knobs and why doesn't the body look more like my jazz bass! I myself said I was skeptical about this bass even when approached by the great Tom Barney who's basses I had the chance to play. I'm a Fender kinda guy but I do have an open mind and didn't care for the SB bass at first by looking at it but if I needed another bass the SB bass would be it and I would have Tom Barney order it so I could get it faster!

I think the issue is, you seemed very harshly critical of the people who would have aesthetics be a purchasing criteria. I personally think it's ok.

Now, if we were talking about someone who would make a purchase decision SOLELY on aesthetics, I might be more critical of them myself, because the music really does have to come first if you're truly a musician (I think to your main point).

But IMHO they don't have to be mutually exclusive. Just because a bass is a great bass, you shouldn't feel obligated to buy it if you don't like the way it looks and pass on it because of that. I think there are enough choices out there we can all have BOTH.

I ordered a B50 with all the electronics and similar options to the SB5000. I just prefer the more traditional body style. I think I even changed the headstock too.

It is almost identical to the SB5000 Koa that I just sold to a Happy fellow TB'r...This one I opted for the solid maple neck and added the 14" fretboard radius to it...The salesperson said it is good amount of difference between the standard 12" and the optional 14" radius...Hoping it feels similar to the SB5000's fretboard.

Does anyone out there have a SB4000 with a 14 inch radius. I love my SB5000 neck and the SB4000 I had seemed a bit narrow with my large hands and being use to a 5 string.

Does anyone have a 14 inch radius? Give me your opinion.
