I normally don't like the Icon headstock on the SB series, but I have to say that it really looks great on that bass.

It's got a lot to do what that nice walnut on both the body and head.

Yeah, I'm not a fan of the Icon headstock on the SB basses either. It fits on this one but I still prefer the standard 4/1 headstock.
It still has straight string pull though. IMO the Icon HS takes away a bit of the Fender vibe that I prefer on the SB's.

This one is definitely a player. Great action! My first take is that it's a bit warmer sounding than the alder/maple SB5000. It primarily has a bit more compressed highs, probably due to the ebony board. The ash seems to add a bit more aggression (or edge) to the tone though so it balances out well. I'll be able to tell more when I play it out.

Good gracious the walnut SB basses are awesome! I actually prefer it to my spalted maple top.

And no- I'm not selling mine to fund a custom build :rollno:

You know, normally I'd say the same thing but to me these basses scream "PICK GUARD".

I'm afraid that without the pick guard I'd lose the last bit of vintage look and it would make the control plate look lost & really out of place.

Agreed. I hate to cover up nice wood, but I agree.

So this Walnut was the one that was earlier posted on this thread, then returned???

The wood/finish on the ones I've seen without a pickguard look great, but that lonely out of place control plate gets to me. If they added an option for rear routing to omit that control plate I'd probably go for one without a pickguard. Then again there's a lot of things I think would bug me in concept, but I end up not caring about at all when I actually see it. So who knows.

The grain on that walnut is gorgeous.

Yeah. I just couldn't resist going for it!
No noise problems at all here in Georgia! I'm very happy with it. I may yet change out the H50's for J99's but I want a little time with to make sure. I really like the midrange tone of the H50's.
