Carvin SB5000 / SB4000 Roll Call...Part 5!

I just went to a smooth jazz fest this past weekend here in Phoenix AZ, and I was amazed by the tone (especially the thump) that was coming out of this Carvin SB500, it was being played by the bass palyer for Euge Groove ( I believe his name was Daryl Williams, he was an amazing player too). I could clearly here the difference in the mid & high end bump on that SB500 (when beinf thumped), compared to all the other basses that were represented there, (everyone was using the same rig), that Carvin held it's own.

This is my first bass, so my referential frame is very limited. To my ears, the Carvin sound is impossibly amazing. This is from me playing straight out of a ZOOM H4N into some excellent headphones, so I imagine the sound booming out of a great stack, with all the trimmings, was impressive. Before ordering the SB5000, I was going mostly on what I'd read. Glad to hear all these rave reviews, God willing it will one day it be me blaring through such a great set up.

Been a while since i chimed in.. going to be doing and experiment with my SB4000 fretless. While i love this bass, i am and always will be a "jazz bass tinkerer" at heart. Meaning.. I love tweaking my basses to make them "mine"... And admittedly.. there's a little just wanting a project (boredom) thrown in there too as this bass completely rocks as it is. It's warm and beautiful sounding.

That said, I'm going to try a Status Graphite fretless neck on my SB4000. I'm hoping it will add even more Mwaaahhh when i want it and give it even more of a fretted sounding crispness for slapping... we'll see. If all goes well and the combo is a keeper i'll probably sell the fretless SB4000 neck to someone who wants to satisfy their fretless needs without having to buy a complete bass. I'll keep you all posted and post pictures. I'd like an affordable 34" scale active 5 string bass. I've had Carvin before but knowing my history it'd be for sale at some point, and that's where Carvin is weak. Beautiful bass though. The 10 day trial make sit even more tempting. Hugh McDonald makes a great case for one. Good enough for a Sadowsky loving guy like him...

Yeah, the Carvin resale caught up with the SB series finally it seems. When they first came out, you could sell them used for a couple hundred off new sale price, but now that the SB buzz has died down on them, it seems hard to get more than $7-800 for one used. Which makes them an absolute steal, but because they are so nice, the ones that were ordered well come up for sale very infrequently.

There is a nice SB5000 in the classifieds right now for $800 and no one is pulling the trigger. Wild. I don't need another SB5000, but man its tempting at that price.

Kirk, congrats on the second! I debated if I could justify another "Jazz" since I already have a Fender Jazz V, but came to a similar conclusion... mine is alder/rosewood, my SB order would be ash/maple. Different enough to justify, I hope! lol

Jarrett, I saw that one a couple days ago, it's pretty hot! It's a 5001 though, so I was able to hold off. ;)

I've narrowed it down all the options and I think I'm pretty set. Just need to make a final decision on color. Kevin @ Carvin has been very helpful/patient with me and answered all my questions and then some. As much as I've been itching to place the order, I keep telling myself that Premier Bass opens on 11/5, so I'm not-so-patiently waiting to see what goodies Dan will have when he opens. :)

That's what I thought, too. I'd previously owned an LB70 and a B5, and neither one impressed me. These SB basses are different. By far the best bass Carvin has made, IMO. I am not an active-bass guy, but the preamp is great.

Finally got to play one of these SB5000s today. Very very comfortable. This one made me consider a 5 string. Still pondering it, but if someone else has any interest in the bass, I can send a few more pictures. Estimated weight is a bit more than I prefer - probably around 9.5.

String through body, active JJ, curly maple fretboard, metallic burnt orange body. Feels wonderful, sounds great too!
