So it seems that all of you TB'ers are leaning more towards the sb5000 over the fender American deluxe. I love the fender tone of the MIA deluxe V. It's the tone that we all grew up hearing on records ,, but the idea of having a "super jazz" (sb5000) is really appealing. So far I keep hearing that the SB5000 is the "best bang for the buck" or "a great bargain" , but if you took money out of the equation,,, if the SB5 and the New American deluxe jazz v were the same price , would you still pay 1700.00 bucks for the SB?

Carvin SB5000 / SB4000 Roll Call...Part 7!

For me (and I own both an SB 4000 and SB 5000), I went with Carvin over Fender due to the ability for color/options customization and weight on the 5 (through chambering). If the looks, weight and price were equal, I would have gone Fender American due to resale value. Carvin does not retain its value well, and is not as well regarded by some (right, wrong, or indifferent) as Fender. I'm sure the quality is comparable between the two, and the bang for the buck of Carvin makes it so appealing that I bought two of them.
I'd buy a used Sadowsky....
I'd never pay $1,700 for a Fender. You'd have to work hard to customize a an SB to make it cost that much money. Like do all Koa then paint over it or something...
Well, no two basses sound alike anyway, but in very general terms, I think you'll find the SB basses to be very Jazz like in tone. I think my SB4000 is a tad brighter and also has a little more bottom end than a typical Fender Jazz. It has a little extra "oomph," in not so very technical terms.
I'd get the Carvin.

You can send it back for a refund if you don't like it, just have to eat shipping. Well worth it in my opinion to find out if the bass is right for you or not.
I had a Sadowsky Metro before by SB5000 and have played several since owing it, and I still prefer the SB5000 to any Metro I've played. Same goes for Fender.
Will you like it? Who knows, only one way to find out.
I dont know about the rest of the questions/discussions going on here, but before I moved, I lived in the same town as Carvin endorser Darryl Williams. I got to see him play a few times and his tone was to die for. I got to take a little bit of a close look at his bass and the quality and the construction was first class too . Couple all that with the price tag and those basses are hard to beat. I remember i was at NAMM when they first released these and was a little iffy on the look, but it's really grown on me since then. And I've still got my spec sheet printed out and hope to order mine soon!!
Thanks guys . I loved the deluxe V but my only concern was I thought the pickups could use more "balls" or "oomph" . Sounds like the SB5 has that.
One last question: for those who have the V/V/T/tb (stock pre) do you wish now you would have gotten the mid control?

Coming into my third year of SB5000 ownership, I have never missed a mid knob. And that's coming from a guy that played a bass (Warwick Streamer Stage I) with a mid knob for 17 years prior to owning the SB.
I ordered just your basic swamp ash whole body and a maple neck. I'm not into all the pretty stuff I just want a bass that can seriously deliver the funk. I listened to the sound clips on Carvins page and it sounds like its a tone monster ... So we will see.
