Carvin SB5000 / SB4000 Roll Call!

I just priced a SB5000 with all standard features except for an ash body and it came out to $998. Has anybody seen an all standard SB5000?

The one I played at the Carvin factory store was pretty much as close to stock as you can get - ash & 3 tone sunburst, passive output... nothing fancy. And yes, that's a crazy good deal give how nice of a bass it is.

Anyone know if the Carvin SB4000 has a Fender 60's or 70's jazz pickup spacing?

70's since its based off of sekou's 70's jazz.

Thanks for the answer, Narud. As a heads up, I was just on the Carvin forums and saw a message saying that the SB4000 had a 60's pickup spacing. I don't think the poster was a company employee, but now I'm confused.

You might want to check out post #142 on this thread. He returned his SB5000 because it was too heavy and hurt his back and neck. I know "heavy" is a subjective term, so you might want to shoot him a PM and get more info.

There's a guy on the Carvin board who should be receiving his tomorrow, and it has the J99/HB configuration. I'm really looking forward to his review.

Like on most other basses, seems the weight varies.

The web site says 9.5 LBS. When I played one, it did *not* feel particularly heavy (not like a '76 J bass or anything!) - - nor was it particularly light. It was about what you'd expect.

This is about how heavy mine feels. It's not too light and not too heavy. I would weigh it but don't have a scale and don't care.

Remember, if you want a super light bass, be prepared to pay true boutique money. In order to consistently produce 7-8.5 lb. basses, Carvin would either have to become very selective about wood, or start chambering bodies. Neither one of those options would be cheap. My guess is that consistently super light basses would add at least another $200-$400 to the cost, and then SB4000/5000s would not look like such a great deal to everyone.

Does anyone know if Carvin sells just the SB preamp? I know they sell "a" preamp but I dont know if its the same one.
