Carvin SB5000 / SB4000 Roll Call!

Kaycee had a nice looking SB5000 but it was a bit on the heavy side so he returned it and ordered a B50. For weeks now I've been asking Carvin people all over TB if they've compared the SB5000 to the B50 and what's the diff other than body outline. And now finally we have a guy who has owned both. We're all waiting for a full report and pictures.

I'm pretty sure I'm getting a SB5000 but I'm still very curious about the B50.

Here are the pics of the B50 that arrived today.


Vinxbass: This is a follow-up for me. I started with an SB5000 two months ago, but had a problem with the weight. I exchanged it for this bass. Several people had asked that I post pics and a review of the B50 when it arrived. I didn't intend to derail this thread.

Wow! Even nicer than I thought it would be. Oh great, here I was set on a SB5000 and now you've got me wondering again! Beautiful, man. Now I know this bass is a little lighter, but would you say the P-style body is a little smaller than the SB?

Thanks dgce. I believe that this bass is enough smaller that it actually has a different, smaller case. Check the case model #s.

This bass is really amazing, as is the SB5000. I don't think you can go wrong either way.

Man, I'd love to see some pics of your sb5000 if you get a moment. That is the EXACT way i have an sb4000 built and ready to pull the trigger on. I'm right with you: Jet Black, black pickguard, maple neck and head stock, chrome hardware. There's something that is just a little extra "funky" about that combo..

Wow.. just dipped back in the thread and found these pics... MAN that is one Funky A@@ Bass!!! I LOVE IT. LOVE the Black dots on the maple.. SWEEET.. that is by far the coolest SB i've seen yet! I'll be ordering up an SB4000 specked out pretty much the same way.. probably go for the sweepable mids in addition to your build.. Dang cool bass man.

You guys are making me nuts. Now I was already set on ordering a SB5000 with a claro walnut figured top on alder with walnut neck and birdseye maple board and headstock. However after seeing the black on black SB, I’m starting to wonder again.

For years, all my guitars and basses have been black or white. I think the black on black with chrome or white with pearloid pickgard and black hardware would look great on a SB (I’d definitely keep the birdseye maple board and headstock). However I thought this time around it would be nice to have something more earthy and smooth to the touch (as in exotic wood with tung oiled body). Then again, between the pictures on this thread and Carvin’s guitar gallery, I’m starting to think in black and white again! Another matter that has been on my mind is that though exotic wood basses are very nice to look at, tone-wise, plain old alder (or ash) with maple neck basses tend to cut through the mix better.

Question, tonally speaking, how practical are exotic wood basses?

Hello all, I am an infrequent poster, but I am compelled to ask a few questions regarding the SB4000/5000.

What are the neck profiles like on them? Could you compare them to another bass? For reference, I have a Stingray 5, a Sterling 4H and a Bongo 4 HH.

If you could give me a comparison to another bass, that would be awesome.
