Case to hold disassembled bass??

I am moving overseas, taking my J bass. Gonna have to take the neck off to travel and avoid oversized baggage fees. Any idea how I should transport? The body can fit in my suitcase but the neck can't. Any ideas/tips on what I should transport it in?

[Edit]: I am looking for a cheap option as I am pretty broke. One idea I had was use my Strat case for the neck and pack the body in my suitcase. Or maybe I could get a gig bag for a smallish guitar (like a parlor guitar), pack the neck (and some clothes) in that, and have that be my carry on.

Remove the tuners too. And go to a sporting goods store or goodwill and look at bag style cases for maybe pool cues or other things same length as the neck.

Yes. Remove the tuners and look at pool cue bags or I have a bag that I think was meant for one of the Squier mini electrics that works well for my headless guitars. That would probably be about the right size.

A DIY option would be a length of PVC pipe. Cut it to size, then duct tape an end cap on one end. Wrap the neck in a soft cloth, the enough bubble wrap so it fits tightly in the pipe. Duct tape another end cap on the other end and you are good to go.

Just get a cheap oversized sports bag like tennis players use, you’ll get all of the parts in there plus some clothes to cushion them.

I got a neck recently that was packed between 2 sheets of polystyrene the area where the neck sat a hole was made then the whole thing was duct taped arrived fine from China to 5he US

I skimmed the posts and it sounds like you're planning to carry a rifle case onboard a plane and you put a dismembered body in your luggage?

3. And you should also rethink about moving overseas if you don't even have enough money to pay for your bass to be checked in baggage.

Definitely not using a rifle case. Too expensive and not trying to get held up by TSA.

It's a $200 fee, for a $600 bass. No thanks. Also, the move isn't optional. My wife is doing her PhD.

Another thought - buy an inexpensive bass there, either used, or a Harley Benton, then sell it before you move back home when she gets her degree.

Get a bigger suitcase? $60-80 depending on where you shop.
I have a couple of suitcases that I’m sure a bass neck will fit into.

Put it in a suit case. neck off. neck might have to go into some kind of slightly over-length carry on - nothing wrong with that. I think rifle case is bad, but deifnitely long tubes like someone mentioned, like drafting folks use, artists use, etc. That might be carry on, dunno, either way it shoudl be fine. bass body buried in your suitcase between clothes.... safe, weird looking in xrays, but safe.

Probably a good idea to relax the tension off the truss rod when you are transporting it. Just make a little mark so you can tighten it back up to the same spot.

That is how I used to carry large rollable posters to conferences. Pretty much indestructible.
