Catalinbread Bass Overdrive

I got mine yesterday from Tonefactor (very quickly I might add) and used it live last night with great success. I liked it so much that I left it on most of the night. I don't use it for high gain just more of a grindy SVT rock tone so it did that very well. This is a keeper for me.

I really want a "grindy" OD pedal. I was hoping that the VT Bass would be it but I didn't fall in love with it when I had it. I may give it a try again but the other two at the top of my list are the Barber LTD SR and the SFT.

Anybody have any thoughts on which would best work for "grindy" rock OD?

oh goodness its wonderful. i have to turn my highs down on my stingray because my strings are so new that they clank. it's ridiculous! but new strings made my bass come alive. mmhm.

the cool thing about the distortron is that it does high gain overdrive with excellence as well as low gain with excellence.

I tried the picking dynamics that the SFT is being raved for and it works really well on the Distortron. I dig in and get awesome tone, I barely pluck and it sounds light and good

I love the Barber and when you crank it a bit more you get a really chunky mid-gain sound. It won't go super high gain though. Only thing is you don't really get that sortof 'clank' over the top that alot of ampeggy style stuff puts out.

rratajski, what were your EQ settings on the SFT? C-bread says it's a Baxandall tone stack, so boosting both the bass and treble will scoop out your mids.

i'm curious about this pedal, cuz i'm looking for something that'll emulate a B15 nicely, other than the VT Bass and the Flipster.

Exactly. You gotta know how to use a Baxandall!

Sure, the SFT is...it is being presented for both bass and guitar.

When we originally set out on our quest to make the best Bass overdrive ever, we never imagined that it could also sound so amazing with guitar but then we got to thinking about some of the classic late 60s/early 70s Ya-Yas era tones and thought we should take a stab at them. And heck while we're at it, it would be really cool if it worked for the more modern drop tuned heavy stuff too. Made sense since those tones were due in large part to guitars being played through amps designed for bass, right?

And what about the Bass tones? We wanted a pedal that FINALLY let you control the amount of grind solely based on your finger attack. You know the feeling - full and rich and clean when you brush lightly and some nice wooly edge when you dig in. At the other end of the sonic spectrum we wanted a drive pedal that could deliver bone-crunching grind and still hold together without sounding thin or turning into a sludgy mess no matter how hard you hit it.

The SFT is what we are talking about.

i used my Zoom H2 to record this straight from my GK 1001RB-II/Berg HT112. Such good quality for such a little device!

One thing to keep in mind about the SFT is it is ALL about touch sensitivity and dynamics. I wanted to capture the character of my '64 B15, where you turn up the volume to the point of break up and play UNDER the grit umbrella for an incredible FEEL. You can access the grit when you really dig in, but until then all you feel is an aliveness and a lot of potential to rip when you decide to go there.

I just received my SFT and have discovered that there is a learning curve... since there wasn't a guide in the box, are you going to publish a users guide for those of use who are not familiar with the Baxandall tone stack?

(Not that I actually ever use a manual until I come up against a wall of nonunderstanding.)
