Caution! Graphic Content! Squier truss rod fix (amateur)

However, the diameter of the stock is smaller. The argument is that the rod is weaker.

That's an assumption-
if the same diameter rod is used:
1- no mat'l is removed,
2- the threads are somewhat work hardened (cold-worked/cold forged),
3- the threads are smoother,
4- the resulting threads are of a larger diameter/size (more strength).

if a smaller diameter rod is used, 1-3 still apply,
however, as noted, the shank may be less strong,
but what fails- the threaded section or the non-threaded section?
I would think that the threaded section of a smaller diameter rod would be the weakest point
because of the smaller diameter at the bottom of the threads.

BTW: after cutting threads in a 3/16" dia rod, the diameter at the bottom of the threads is pretty small.

Based on ten minutes research of the internet (almost none at all) it appears that the rods used for rolled threads are smaller than those used for cut threads. The diameter of the rod bisects the rolled thread at the mid point between trough and crest. So d-x and d+x.

As far as the rest goes, you're on your own. As I stated in the post, I am not and engineer. The fact that I act like one in the shop is driven by a lack of knowledge fueled by grandiose delusion. However, when something is really important I have sources who will consult.

This ain't that important.

That may be so in many cases, but it's relative to the space req'mts of an application and how much the weight/mat'l of a larger dia. rod factors into o/all costs..

I didn't understand it either. This (possibly unbiased source?) is one of the things I found:

"Assuming the workpiece material meets the yield and flow requirements for rolling, the process offers several advantages over cutting threads. Compared to other production methods, rolled threads have improved physical properties. The cold working that takes place in the thread rolling process produces an increase in tensile strength and a better surface finish than is achieved with cutting operations."

Apparently rolling makes stronger threads with a better finish. However, the diameter of the stock is smaller. The argument is that the rod is weaker. The counter to the argument is that it is the threads that take the stress so the first argument is superfluous.

Maybe Bruce can chime in on rolled vs. cut threads.

Exactly, the thread material is pushed into place instead of material being torn away. The threads end up significantly stronger.
 
Ok, update time. I was able to unscrew the truss rod from the anchor without too much trouble.

And low and behold the truss rod nut I have threads right on the anchor end of the rod:

So, I've threaded the broken end of the rod and now it fits into the anchor, added some "always seize" better known as locktite and now to see if this will work. I could wait for the new truss rod, but I like the idea of using the original better.

In truth the major advantages of rolled threads are manufacturing considerations, but rolled threads are marginally stronger and less prone to galling (the reason for my comment). Clearly the Stewmac truss rod threads are cut and the Allparts rod look the same , so maybe my advice is moot.
 
Rolled threads are supposed to have better resistance to metal fatigue than cut threads. The rolling process work hardens the material, as several people said above - effectively it's a bit like locally cold forging the shape - and rolled threads have slightly rounded peaks and valleys. Cutting leaves sharper threads and these are stress concentrations, where fatigue cracks can initiate. I am not a machinist or metallurgist, but I think this is pretty commonly accepted. for ex [Invalid or Expired Link Removed] I don't think it would be an absolute requirement for truss rods and the OP; but in general rolled threads are used where the piece and method of manufacturing allow it.

Squier VM necks with hardware are going for $165 plus shipping. 2 just sold on eBay for that price. I purchased the whole darn VM 70's jazz bass for $106 shipped, so after I sell the loaded body I'll probably about $50 into this neck, so to me it's worth it. An no, I'm not bored, because I have this project to work on;)

Hey just a quick question sence you seem to have experience with trust rod issues!
(bare with me guys & gals) not changing topic.
If the trus rod won't move either way (left or rite) almost as if it's frozen! What could it be , how can it be fixt ? is it repairable? We're talking about an expensive vintage 91 Ken smith Bass neck 5 so it's defenetly worth trying to save. Thanks
