Why can't people get this right? I heard a soldier say it wrong. It's an insult to the US Army horse troops. It's like calling Dennis, Denise.

I used to play miniature wargaming with a guy who always called his horse soldiers his calvary.
Correcting him was of no use so we quit saying anything.

You say "these days" as if there was once some golden era of correctness when nobody ever got anything wrong. It's as okay as it ever was to get things wrong.

Pretty much yes there was (ceptin' fore the mountaines where ya merrie yer kinfolk I rekkin). If you learned to read, you learned to enunciate with care. Now practically everyone reads but the quality of the language is diminishing. Attention to detail is openly derided.

It took me 20 years to get my mother to say disc instead of tape. All CDs, DVDs, and Blu-Rays were tapes, to her.
People still use the term "mix tape" which is just dead wrong.

One that bugs me is people saying and writing "could of" or "should of", when it's HAVE not OF.

The contractions being
"...should've not" touched that, "...could've not" said that.

Yeah, that's where the mistake comes into play, because they hear people say "could've" and think they're hearing "could of".
Same as almost everyone forgot that "you are" is contracted to "you're", not "your".

"Your" kills me too. My dad texted me that the other day. He's 76 so I'm proud he texts and uses email daily (he won't retire from consulting because he doesn't have to leave the house) but I always considered him to be pretty well spoken. I think he's been brainwashed by years of other people's misuse.

People say "It's on tape!" referring to Video. Nothing is anymore. I have been correcting people for many years about the Cavalry thing. I'm glad it's not just me. Another one people say "At the same token" instead of "By the same token", or "irregardless"- I don't think it's a word.

It wasn't, until Websters added it to the dictionary.
These days, if something gets used incorrectly long enough & by a lot of people, it gets added.
