Double Bass "Cello Bow" jerk

My teacher has complained, and I have noticed a great deal recently that when some cellists play, the do this bow "jerk" in where they pull the bow really fast and then very slow at the tip and vibrate. They do it...a lot. Is this suitable for Bass? I've started noticing it a lot, and it's really quite annoying, especially in Classical and Baroque pieces. I see people doing it on bass, and it just makes that note stand out. It's like an artificial accent or something, and when it's done on harmonics it just sounds terrible. Anyone know what I mean?

I know what you're talking about. Violinists do it a lot too. I don't like it either. I don't see bass players do it very often. I think people do it mainly when they want to emphasize a note but it doesn't make much sense to me. I know my teacher hates it. The concertmaster of Philly does it a lot. He sounds amazing though.
