I could understand maybe making the first e soft, pet - er - kin, but some people emphasize the first syllable pet - urkin and some people leave the t out all together perkins...

If the "L" sounds like "W," then I got it wrong
Not necessarily, how did you know that? There IS actually an L/W connection in Polish. I pronounce my name with an "L" but back in da' hoodski it's pronounced with a "W" sound.
