Channel Bound Necks?

The beauty must be in the eye of the beholder :).

Even though it does require tighter QC for the neck material stock, a construction like that probably shaves a good 20% off from the total manufacturing cost of a neck.
A trained monkey can assemble that ;).

Standard Fender mass production optimization thinking IMHO, and initially nothing wrong with that.

From a pure engineering standpoint, the different shrinking/expansion rates of the "binding" and the FB will cause cracks though.
No-one sane tries to replace a BO TR, so making that very difficult isn't really a concern.

So they lay the fingerboard into the neck rather than laying it on top?

Since different woods move at different rates would it not be possible for the fingerboard to break the neck if it expands too much?

I'd be very careful with these and wait until they have a track record until I'd get one.

Do woods move at different rates? I mean, Alembic makes those 7 piece necks with different woods all sandwiched together and I've never heard of them breaking because of wood expansion. Isn't that the same thing?

Probably a year or so. Than they will realize how conservative the majority of the market for musical instruments really is (esp guitars/basses), call it a day and go on with producing their oldschool P's, J's, Teles, Strats, etc.

At that point, everyone starts ranting again about them not doing something revolutionairy or new, and then the cycle starts all over again with more of these inventions!

It's a bit like the weather: When it's hot, everyone wants cold because it's too hot. And then when it's cold, it's too cold and it should be hot.

Excuse my somewhat poor English, it's not my first language. But I hope I got the message trough.
 
I really like the look. Even though I don't particularly like bound necks or rosewood fretboards (despite the fact that all of my basses have rosewood fretboards, I prefer the look of maple), for some reason this design intrigues me.

I have low expectations that they will be around very long, for reasons mentioned above.

With the normal way the FB is bound, no.
Glue creeps or gives the required amount of movement.
The grain orientation(s) on somewhat rare wooden binding is also chosen in a way that it'll not break or crack.

In this case when the wooden "binding" is very thin and the grain orientation in the shear plane (where the FB/neck glue line lies) isn't optimal, it possibly will.
On the end of the FB it is even worse, there the "binding" is very fragile.

No, different construction entirely.
No such shear forces that would exceed either the material or glue strength.
As we all know though, the seasonal changes requiring TR tweaking are usually more severe with 2 wood necks than in the single wood variety.

Also, within the same species, the way the wood is cut introduces yet another variable.

If Alembic was going with this, I'd be certain that it would NOT crack.

Again, multilams are an entirely different construction method compared with what Fender is getting into the market now.

That said, with poorly chosen or improperly cured multilam wood the surface can go from smooth to a bit bumpy and back when the humidity changes.
Whether the finish will crack a s result depends on the finish.

I'm guessing one of the main reasons this method is chosen is because it will be easier to finish the necks. Rosewood especially absorbs finish much differently than maple and usually requires fill work after the final neck coat is applied (based on my limited experience working topcoat at PRS 12 years ago). By keeping the finished neck wood uniform that process can be eliminated. Curious to hear what production lines this will and will not be applied to.
