Cheap basses with best stability. (under 300)

Another vote for Squier VM. Many but not all of them can be found in your budget.

I've had five Subs, a few Squier VMs so I'm familiar with them, however I'm going to say the better bass in that price range is an Ibanez Talman bass.
A TMB100 is easily within your range at $199 new. TMB300 is $299. if you opt for used, you can find the TMB100 for about $150 or less.
Play it side by side with a Sub and you'll see what I mean, the P/J pickups give it more tonal variety. It's also better than the Squier VM Jag. The neck on the Talman is super stable- it's thicker (but comfortable) than the standard Ibanez SR bass.

I have experience with the subs and squire classic vibe stuff. All great. For the money I dont think anything can beat a classic vibe jazz. I picked one up for 160 and it plays/sounds excellent. Better than many of the mim fenders ive had. I've regularly played a mim jaguar a bandmate had and it was good too. Never had the Ibanez the guy posted above. It looks like a great bass too.

+1. The one I owned felt like a fire axe. I've laos owned a Cort GB74 and a Yamaha BB424X, and both of those had solid necks. With the Cort especially, I was able to remove three strings and the fourth would still be at the correct pitch and action. A lot of basses I've owned with less stable necks would have fretted out long before.

Wow, that's pretty stable. A chunky neck 5 string ovangkol bolt on Warwick from 2000 will probably do that as well, makes my 98 jazz with posiflex graphite rods feel like an unreinforced MIM in comparison. But several times over budget in this thread.
