Cheap Dean Bass Sighted Sir! Ready, Aim....FIRE!!!

For slightly more money, I got this:

First of all, kudos to anyone who will actually make a bass that looks like that. (There is also a dayglo pink version.) Some basic set-up work (nut slots in particular), and it plays surprisingly well and sounds surprisingly good. For a while I had a Bart in it, and it could go toe-to-toe with my much-more-expensive Precisions.

An interesting note about this bass: the nut width is narrow J-style, but the string spread at the bridge is actually wider than my Fenders. So it has a more pronounced neck taper than any other bass I've owned.

One day I'm going to find a cheap used Metalman V or Z, and when that happens I will have another cheapo Dean in the arsenal.

I've been impressed by the cost/quality ratio of Dean's lower end offerings. If you want one I recommend this:

You save $35 and get another pick up. If you are concerned about Amazon quality I wouldn't worry. I have ordered many basses from them. Most are in better shape than they would be in most local shops. If there are any issues returns are easy or you can get them to discount the item for any blemishes. I just scored this in an unopened factory box (not a refurb or b-stock) the other day for $139.

Dean Edge Q4 Amberburst. Plays great right out of the box. The string aren't the freshest but it's probably been sitting in a box for a year or more.

I have a very similar Edge Q4 and it's a great bass. I've never had anyone play it and not be surprised by it being a "Dean" and sounding and feeling so good. I keep thinking of selling it as I've gotten a couple "better" basses recently, but I still grab this one when I'm sitting around the house.

I have the Metalman V and Z (Explorer shape). At $199 each it was a no-brainer. Each deliver on looks and sound. This is coming from a seasoned veteran with 35+ years behind the four string and closing in on 50 different instruments over the years. And yes, it does seem like a very, very long time. Very little has changed or improved since my first good bass. I do very much love to play and after a proloned hiatus due to illness I am back and strong, albeit playing Chinese basses. I yearn for the days when I had American Fenders and Gibsons, but that's another thread. I'm content (not satisfied) playing my Deans and an all-purpose Squier 70's Modified. 'Nuff said.

If they're $199 new, splurge. You don't even have to buy 2 like I did. Go for it, you will be glad you did.

whore him out? what a crock! you've got zero clue what you're talking about. dimebag had a contract with dean that HE signed. the only reason he ever went to washburn is because dean quit making instruments for a few years. once dean got back into it, dimebag went back to them. so not only are dean not "whoring him out," they have every legal right in the world to use his name, and dime would have wanted it that way. i'm sure his estate gets a healthy chunk of change when one is sold. or would you rather his family be forced to leave all that money on the table because some moony eyed fan thinks it's whoring him out? hey, capitol records still puts out john lennon music and he's dead, too. is that whoring him out?

honestly, some of the utter nonsense that comes out of people on here completely amazes me.

^ This... I have to agree with Jimmy on this... Dime would have wanted it this way...
