Cheap Trick on Austin City Limits . . .

. . . thought TP killed it, especially "Gonna Raise Hell."

My high school theme song. Yep, they killed it. That's a real band. Missed Bun. He's proof you don't need "the look" to play great rock.

Thanks. I was about to whine about missing it.

One of my all time favorite bands. I have seen them a few times and the best show was when when they hit big in the early 80's (sold out). I always like the songwriting and the guitar styles they used. Bun E sat with our drummer this past year in his companys drum booth, chatted and played on their kit. They said he's a nice guy and said he is playing some locally but tired of the road.

Cheap Trick... Man, have THEY had a roller-coaster ride! I saw them do a stadium show in SD back in '79... and then a few year later saw that they were doing the kiddy arena at Disneyland...

Hope they're "Back" - that's the music o my yoots...

Damn this forum! Can't get the sound of that 12er out of my head.

Yep.... it's a real problem all right!

Wanted a 12-string bass ever since first hearing Cheap Trick at Budokan around 1979. Finally ordered a custom Hamer B12S in 1990. Then I moved on to a Chaparral B12L... then later added a Dean Rhapsody 12... then sold that and got a Waterstone TP-12 34". My B12L has Lane Poor M3.5W pickups; I installed a Bartolini CX in the neck of the TP-12 (fat tone for a 12-string).

I was also hooked since Budokan. Just got my first 12 though. The Waterstone TP-12 medium scale. Is the neck width and string spacing significantly different on the Hamers?

If you're talking about a recent TP-12 32", it should be the same neck width as my TP-12 34" (48 mm). Using that as a reference, the stock neck width and string spacing is somewhat narrower/tighter on the Hamer B12L. Sheldon Dingwall widened the overall spacing on mine by around an 1/8". While the somewhat wider TP-12 could conceivably be played fingerstyle, the Hamer practically begs for a pick.

That said, I find my Hamer considerably easier to play. The fretwork on my TP-12 could use a little leveling, plus I find that the neck profile is just a bit harder to navigate. The Waterstone has a much deeper, more bassy, tone. The Hamer is more "piano-y". From what I hear, the 32" models are easier to manage.

I enjoyed the show! I was a fan of Cheap Trick during the late 70's,80's. I think Tom Peterson is a good bass player. He might not play a lot of flashy licks, but he has a good sound and when he does play something cool, it usually stands out.

A good example is the studio version of Surrender. Have you ever heard a glissando like the one he plays at the second intro before the second verse? Sure he had some help from the mixing board making it stand out like that but when I hear that, It practically makes the hair on the back of my neck stand up.

How about the solo bass vamp on the song "gonna raise hell" or if you have heard the song 'Big eyes' to listen to the heavy pick grinding tone he has during that little bass solo lead.

When any bass player plays something that gets me off  :D :bassist: he's OK in my book regardless how under-rated or what the snobbish elites may think of him or his band.

Is that the ultimate compliment??? :hmm:
