What if what makes them sound & play so good just takes more time & effort [ie:more cost]? If they deliver the tone, the feel, & last longer than most marriages, they've earned my hard earned dollar. One of the key factors that give TI their sound is the flexibility. So id start by looking at the lightest available gauges in typical hexcore rounds. To my blasphemous ears TI's sound really close to extra light gauge halfround strings. I love every sound sample I hear from their products but I too refuse to support them, they strike me as folks who overcharge for a product simply because the ravanous appetite of its consumers allow them to jack up the price to 11, in this day and age any effort by a company to have its products remain affordable goes a very long way in keeping my business.
Now I'll sound like Pino in no time LOL
If I were to attribute to malice that which is adequately explained by the realities of international commerce, I would assume Sadowsky, La Bella and even Dunlop as "folks who overcharge a product". Because Thomastik-Infeld flats are less expensive, here in Europe where they're made, than the aforementioned competition. The truth is much simpler: you're on the wrong side of the Atlantic. One of the key factors that give TI their sound is the flexibility. Hi
I am new to the world of P basses and Flats. The Youtube videos I have seen showed me that The TI flats are brighter than others and seem to keep the sound of the P bass pickups. I also looked at Labellas Deep Talkin Flats ( because of Jamerson) which seem to be much darker. Is that right? Coming from active J basses with roundwounds I have not developed an ear for what is good about one type of flats vs another. But I do like the sound of the TIs. I just don't like the Price tag. Almost 100.-? Jeez. Is there a cheaper alternative? I can get a set of the Labellas for $40 bucks. Are the TIs that much better or is it just because Pino is using them? Is there another string that sounds similar that doesn't hurt you as much in the pocket book?
I'm 67,The flats might outlive me LOLI hear you about the price tag on TI flats, how many years to you expect to be playing bass?!
So much good information here. Thank you all. The more I read the more I think I might have done the right thing by going with the TIs. I'll find out on Tuesday. On a side note, I made a mute kind of like the nordie mute for my Roundwound P Bass. I sounds pretty close to what I want. The jamerson sound of course and also for Latin Jazz/Salsa stuff, which I also get to do occasionally. So with the mute the TIs will probably get really close without killing my hands.
There is a seller on E Bay who has a budget version of the Nordymute, which seems really overpriced to me. Especially since nobody offers free shipping. I ordered one of those.Bass Guitar String Mute - 4/5/6 String - 16mm thru 19mm string spacing | eBay
