Cheapest 6 string that's worth it ?

There's a retired Peavey employee named Chip in the Austin area who bought/salvaged a lot of stock from Hartley's storage and attics in the old plant (Hartley pretty much told him he could have them). He's been building instruments using Peavey bodies, etc. for some time. Are some of these from his stock?

To the OP, sorry for the slight hijack. You mean Chip Todd? The guy pictured below. Extremely nice guy. Was building all kinds of things including the skeleton T60 and so cool short scale basses. He is completely retired now and living in South Texas. Here is a couple of shots of the parts you were talking about. My understanding is he had a hell of a yardsale before he moved. No all the TL-6's pictured I have picked up over the years. I was going to have Chip build me a skeleton T40 but sadly he retired before it could happen.

That's Chip, all right. A bass player buddy from Austin took me out to his place to the workshop. He had rescue greyhounds in his back yard and house and a fully functional dragboat engine in the garage/workshop. A really interesting guy. Where is he in South Texas?
He was doing his own spin on TL6 basses IIRC (back on topic, phew!)

Peavey Grind and Dean Edge are cheap... new. Yeah, I tried a Grind one or twice and didn't dislike it.

Yes, they are, but you wont find them new in the sub-$300 range unless somebody is clearancing them out.

Yessir. I've been really curious to try out those Defiant 6's, though. They have a pretty sweet look to them and they're just slightly more narrow in spacing at the nut.

It is my intention to purchase either a Brice $450 or Douglas $190 6-string. I'll change the pickups & add a Kahler tremolo. To be completely upfront; I have no knowledge of upgrading an instrument. So at the very least, my investment will be minimal to learn how to work on a bass.

+1 on the ouglas. I picked up a 5er a couple of months ago to see if I wanted to play one and I am VERY happy with the build and feel. I did have a peavey cirrus 5 bxp last year that I was never happy with so I traded it for a piano 4 my daughter (never liked the neck) I'll probably end up switching out the electronics at some point but for now I'm pretty happy

I've been dying to try both of those basses. I love that the Defiant's are passive, and pretty conklin-esque.

I mean, that would not sound too lame next to my G&L. I was thinking Ibanez Soundgear (SR506 perhaps), and Schecter basses. Other ideas ?

What about an Ibanez BTB series?

ibanez gsr206. had one for awhile. simple, but lightweight, slim neck, overall an amazing bass for its price

I just bought an ESP LTD D-6. Looks really nice in person, plays well, sounds good enough. It's crying for some EMGs though...

I have a Peavey Grind 6 that is absolutely great for the money I spent on it. Other than that, I'd say a Spector...really nice basses.

Edit* I will mention that the Peavey has pretty tight spacing. Not sure on the Spector 6's spacing as I've only noodled on one and I can't remember. I've played their 5's more extensively and really liked the sound of them.

The neck was soo damn comfortable and so light weight. Great for me.
But i am not sure about the sound and the tuners....?
