Cheapest 6 string that's worth it ?

Peavey TL-6 ... hands down the best 6 string for the price. IMHO. (may not be the cheapest ... but that depends on your idea of cheap. and it's quite worth it)
Pro quality, and rock solid. Pretty sure quite a few TB'ers will agree. :)

I was actually really impressed with the Brice 6-string. Tonally, I'd say it was on par, if not better, than a stock Spector Legend 6. What's more, it lends itself quite nicely to mods.

A Peavey Grind 6 and Dean Edge 6 are also great basses if you can find them used. They should be around the same price range.
+1
The Brice is surprisingly good. I have had students bring them in and have been impressed. www.rondomusic.com
I would also check Craigslist and/or Ebay for a used Carvin 6. They can be had for a reasonable price.

Peavey Grind and Dean Edge are cheap... new. Yeah, I tried a Grind one or twice and didn't dislike it.

i've been using a pair of unmodded Dean Edge Q 6's for a couple years now.

decent construction. not the widest range of tones, but i've been very happy with them.

i think i paid about $300 each used. not too hard to find.

I'd check out anything from Rondomusic. They make Brice and Douglas basses. I picked up a 5str fretless....not too bad after doing some mods and slapping some D'Addarios on 'em. I don't know how they stay in business....i paid $165...i think.

I mean, that would not sound too lame next to my G&L. I was thinking Ibanez Soundgear (SR506 perhaps), and Schecter basses. Other ideas ?

I own and Ibanez SR506 and they are actually quite nice. Be careful when buying one though, my original one had some uneven fretwork that I needed to have fixed after purchasing it.

The tones are pronounced, but very smooth sounding. Yes you can make it sound brash for heavy metal, but its always going to have a smoother sound compared basses that have really "ballsy" tones like Sadowsky.

I think it plays fantastically as well.

It is my intention to purchase either a Brice $450 or Douglas $190 6-string. I'll change the pickups & add a Kahler tremolo. To be completely upfront; I have no knowledge of upgrading an instrument. So at the very least, my investment will be minimal to learn how to work on a bass.

PLEASE refrain from telling people how good these are. I am trying to buy all of them in existance then drive the prices up so I can resell them and retire. All joking aside not only are these the best 6 string I have ever played but they are the best BASS I have ever played. Also I found two of them for less then 400.00. Gratuitous photo to follow. :hyper:

I am eaten up with jealousy-fie on you, Sir!:D
There's a retired Peavey employee named Chip in the Austin area who bought/salvaged a lot of stock from Hartley's storage and attics in the old plant (Hartley pretty much told him he could have them). He's been building instruments using Peavey bodies, etc. for some time. Are some of these from his stock?
