Cheapos and Pawn shop Weirdos

Hi Justin,
I know you have many axes of many stripes, but I was wondering if you have any weirdo/cheapo beasts that you stumbled on that get a fair amount of play. Not so much coveted rare vintage oddballs, but y'know, real pawn shop/garage sale kinda basses. Or, do you have any new knockoffs of vintage basses--like new Epi Gibson reissues, or Eastwoods, or any of that sort of thing that you find work well?

Cheers!

Eko bass. Sick. Cheap and great sounding. New cheapos don't rate for me. I don't dig those Eastwood things. All that "pseudo-retro" stuff feels cheap and sounds too modern.

Yeah--I hear you----I've tried a few of the cheaper new reissues of EBs, Beatles, etc. in hopes of being able to affordably add that vibe to my collection, but they all have sounded basically the same to me--just kind of thin and bright. I keep thinking, well, maybe different strings, etc. etc. but it might be a losing battle . . .

it was cheap but man it sounds so good. it is my main guitar right now. i recommend checking it out if you havent.

I have used one of the VM Telecasters. They're pretty and are extremely bassy-sounding. They have that tone that hits you in the gut, but I can see the bass getting lost in the mix if you're not careful. From what I remember, it was fairly light and the neck was chunky, in a good way (think 'junk-in-the-trunk' as opposed to Star Jones).

I was recently in a shop and noticed the squier posted there!
alhtough Im more of a modern sound type (not sterile and glassy, but modern - for lack of a better word)!:D
In any case, the bass wasn't that much of a thrill. I mean, in the budget area, its a great bass, but it still doesn't have a sound I would put to tape if I had a second option, put it that way
