Strangely enough, I don't hang around in situations where I'd have conversations like this as a musician. Only on TB. My band meetings/rehearsals are actually fun... because we don't deal on this level.

I've dealt with people who love to argue for the sake of argument, who really don't know the music in question but need to be right anyway... and those aren't the situations I stay in. I tend to work with people who can show up at a gig and play. Who can articulate what they want to do clearly, the first time. Come prepared to do the job. Don't need to rehearse a million times. People like myself ;). That's why I actually enjoy the gigs I have. And the pay is usually much better when you work with seasoned professionals.

There is no "rolleyes" icon big enough or pained enough for this. Just because you were sticking to the "we don't know what it is" side of the argument (a reasonable position in principle) doesn't make your incessant and petty arguing any more palatable or "innocent". Even if your initial point was right, your subsequent behavior would turn almost any reader against you.

(Same goes for my buddy Smurf, actually, in this instance.)

It's a trip, isn't it? It ain't the bandstand, the studio, the classroom or anything else I'm used to-TB is it's own category ;)
BTW, surely you know I meant that as a complement.....

Absolutely, Roy. I think you know I feel the same way about you and this is, at least IMO, just a conversation. I guess I should tell you (or admit) that I have an IT background going back to before it was even called IT:D. It came naturally because I think I'm a very logical person, some would probably say to a fault. I like to look at all angles of a problem when I attack it which is the basis of my stance in this thread. I would have to ignore some pretty glaring (to me) things before I'd act as many did here. Do that in IT and you end up chasing your tail. I know lots of IT folks who did just that... repeatedly.

I finally made the commitment to myself that I couldn't stay in a situation with people who like to argue about music about ten years ago. I was in yet another start-up band and the keyboard player, who played completely by ear and knew nothing about note and chord names (not saying this automatically makes him a bad person but bear with me) would come in week after week playing something different from the prior week that would then clash with what we were doing... and he'd argue vehemently that everyone else was wrong.

If there was a recording of the previous rehearsal he'd demand we listen to it and every time it would prove he was wrong. If there wasa recording of the song the same thing happened. He'd do that week in and week out. Couple that with a lead vocalist who refused to learn his songs and complained to a background singer because she hadn't written out lyrics for him and a drummer who repeatedly showed up high, giggled incessantly and kept dropping his sticks and I finally told them I couldn't keep doing this and they should find someone else...

at which point the vocalist called me a name. I've mellowed over the years so I smiled and let it go.

I don't miss that crap at all. OTOH talking here is a guilty pleasure that I can turn off.

OK, EVERYBODY JUST CALM DOWN!!!!!!

here's my thought on it as someone who just jumped into it and eagerly read the thread from start to finish...had the fodera guys built this bass, it could have easily been proven with an email to the guys who would have built it and the auction wouldn't have been pulled by ebay. or at the very least, the guy would have started another auction.

therefore, my ruling is brad, your argument is passionate but passion does not equal facts. there is way more evidence to support the case that it was, indeed, a bogus fodera. therefore, to borrow a line from wayne of wayne's world, i'm giving you the sign of the null set.

Old habits die hard. I automatically, almost subconsciously save any out of the ordinary bass pics on my computer.

My better half worked in IT for quite some time so I've hung out with folks in that world too and picked up how they roll...So I did catch that. ;)
It's interesting how many IT folks are either players or recording engineers as well.
BTW, Doctors are the most challenging students, IMHO. They HAVE to be right so much in their professional lives that studying something that's a much of a moving target as Music is can be troublesome.

I can only imagine treating a mode as a life or death proposition.

I get asked to teach often and I'm at the age where I'd like the option of being blunt when I think it's called for (not often but sometimes). Many people don't like that. Who knew?
:D

I can see the IT/ music correlation, particularly on bass. I chose electric bass unconsciously because it was far more logical than trumpet, which I played for a long time.
