laid out!

Anyone tried single coil Chi's with a pre amp? I'm thinking about getting a 44-01 and dropping some in - I see Hanon offer them as a direct replacement for the Barts that it comes with. I basically want a bass with big singles coils, that can do something somewhat like a jazz tone, with both active and passive.

Any recommendations for a pre amp that matches well with the Chi's, or are they better off being left passive?

I got these Chi-Sonic pickups, from Bo, in 2011. For a variety of reasons the bass did not get completed until last week. It started out as an Aria DMB-380 in sunburst finish. These basses come with generic jazz style pickups. They sounded fine but boring. Since so much time had passed, I had forgotten what the Chi-Sonics were going to sound like. Man, my head almost exploded with delight when I plugged in! I'm not too great at describing sound. I like what I like. And I really love these pickups. They Punch through like a freight train. Extremely well balanced output. They really respond well to your attack. They can do modern growl or vintage rock and funk tones depending on where and how hard you dig in. No flabby bottom with these. They stay nice and tight. Very impressive. I'm gonna get some more of these. This time I won't wait three years to get them installed.
