Choosing the groove on bridge saddle

Nordstrand big split 5 pickups can be ordered with 16.5, 17, 17.5, 18, 18.5 and 19 mm spacing. If exact spacing is not relevant, why so many options?

I have no proof either way but if spacing doesn’t matter, Nordstrand would be putting effort offering options without any supposed payback.

Hmmmm.

Consider that many Fender basses do not have the neck correctly aligned with the body, as well as the position of the pickups, and even the bridge is sometimes out of position. A few millimeters, enough to make string alignment impossible to be done perfectly. You choose whether to have strings aligned with the pickup poles, or with the neck, or with whatever distance you want between them. Line up the outer strings then the center ones, try measuring distances across the center of the strings, it's not rocket science.
