Double Bass Chorda plain gut A string!

If I had to guess, I'd imagine that the Pure Corde A, being essentially a copy of Nicholas Baldock's strings, should be in the same ball park when it comes to having a rougher surface for the bow to grab on; I'd also imagine that just moving up to the Pure Corde (or Gamut, for that matter) should have a noticeable effect just due to being a step up in quality (and price, alas).

Well, don't ask me why but... Last night I decided to replace the Onyx ebony endpin with the old Cameleopard 1/2" carbon fiber endpin on the bass and BOOM the A is a complete cannon. The G and D sound richer (marginally) and the Spiro Solo F#/E is a tad warmer, but the A is night and day.

Insert emoji for headshake here!!
New strings can wait... for a while :)

Just to complete the report: I tried the titanium pin (clearer GD/weaker EA); oak (warmer all around but less volume); rosewood (very clean sound, but lacked power). Nothing came near the BOOM on the A like the carbon fiber Cameleopard pin. I've should have paid more attention in both algebra and physics class in high school!

Have there been any updates on the Chorda A?
I've been using and Olive E&A combo for the past few years, with Chorda D&G.

The A gave uo the ghost the other day, so I pulled out an old Pistoy A I had as a backup. For my tonal taste the gamuts aren't even close to the Chorda, but I do miss the raw A experience.

Damn,
I emailed Pirastro the other day and they said that the Raw A is not a thing.

Does anyone have an opinion on the Kuerschner vs Pure Corde choices? If they even exist?

If you had a choice in Kuerschner guages, what would you go for to match with the normal Chorda guages?

I've had the Toro plain GDA on for some time (the A is 4.0 BTW) - just did the Beethoven 9 and Verdi requiem with them. I think they are terrific gut strings, reasonably price; thick and boomy. They should be part of any gut conversation here. The staff at the office in Italy can answer questions in English. Viva Italia! I used a beat up plain Lezner A paired with Gamut G+D pistoy and Oliv E for a while, blended well. I got a Gamut plain A to try to match the Gamut more, good string but didnt match well, I should have got an unvarnished one. Sometimes the strings from completely different makers are the ones that match. I've had some correspondence with Wild Gut Strings, they have a reasonable price for a Gut A and I've heard they play well. Right now I'm using Oliv E+A with Gamut G+D, but have thought about going back to the Gut A. Good luck in you search, let us know what you come with!

Thanks for all these reccomendations
The Wild, and Toro strings seem interesting.

I just remembered I may have an old Lenzner A deep in a drawer.

Yeah Gamuts are surprising in how unique they sound compared to other guts.
