Chorus For Bass. Am I Insane?

Boss chorus and flange effects just have a certain sound to me that I love. I think it's got a lot to do with having mostly been exposed to chorus sounds through musicians that used all Boss pedals. The Julia's a great pedal, and on paper it looks like it should be better for bass; maybe it is, for someone not as into the sound of Boss chorus. For me though, the CE-2W set to it's CE-1 mode is the best version of the best chorus sound in the world. It's also remarkably clear and articulate for a chorus with no clean blend or high pass filter, but I say that knowing I have more tolerance for a chorused bass sound turning into a wooshy gurgly mess than some other players have.

Having had an MS-60B on my board for years, along with first a B3 and now a B1 Four, the zoom chorus fleeing a have been good but haven’t held up to stand alone units imo. Line 6 HX FX is better, but I’ve felt more inspiration from standalone units.

On the other hand, I’ve also found much worse than Zoom chorus stuff too :)

Chorus is my favorite bass effect, ever since hearing Phil Chen's bass line on Rod Stewart's Passion. Wish Boss would make a Stereo Chorus like that for bass ! Duff McKagan's early GnR stuff is also a favorite, I think he used a Yamaha rack fx unit.

For years I used an MXR Stereo Chorus and recently changed for the more pedal-board friendly EHX Bass Clone, which has a bit of that swirling quality I like.

I think the reason I haven’t completely settled on loving the CE-2W, is it doesn’t seem to quite get all Simon Galluppy... I’m close to loving it above all others.... close...

ohh and I have the CEB-3 not the CEB-1

Tech 21 Bass Boost Chorus = sounds great... useable tones... tons of variety in this pedal.

I love my MXR Bass Chorus Deluxe and DOD Deep Freeze. I don’t use them that often, but they both keep some of the lows from getting “chorused”. Great effects, but can be a little subtle for some in my experience. They’re both very tweakable, though, and can be made less subtle if you want. I much prefer a separate Flanger for bass than the Flanger on the BCD, but I think that’s because I like a faster Chorus and slower flange.

While I like chorus and reverb, IME they only work when it's solo bass, or when there's a quite part in a song etc. I didn't have luck with them in a busy mix, they make the bass sound muddy and less defined.

That being said, the chorus pedals I liked were the yellow MXR and the Fulltone Choralflange.

I prefer delays and phasers. I got the MXR delay which can do subtle chorusing if needed.
