Chorus vs. Flanger, and what's good?

Yeah that video is cool as hell. That dude is a good ass salesman, not to mention a cool as hell rock style bassist. Loved his riffs. Man that Tech 21 seems to really fatten your tone.

By the way, I'm glad you interact with me on this topic. I'm trying to get as much feedback and interaction as possible when it comes to this chorus discussion, because I've been on this quest and I would like to see it end before long.

Oh yeah no problem man. I just started looking for mine not long ago and to be honest, the Tech 21 just seems to almost blow the others out of the water. The list of really good chorus pedals always seemed short to me. The Boss is decent, the MXR sounds like it's okay but i really don't like the tone all that much. For me personally it comes down between the Tech 21 and Soundblox. The Soundblox has a flanger but you can probably achieve a subtle flange with the Tech 21. I also dig that warm tone. The mix knob and the fact the Tech 21 uses the detune 2-voice operation rather than a sweeping lfo is also really nice. The Soundblox does beat it out on options though, and could have more use depending on what styles of music you play. It's also $20 cheaper. (But at those prices what's $20?)

The MXR bass chorus deluxe was the one that really had my attention at first. But it seems pretty subtle. And then I heard it gets lost in a band mix. The crossover function that preserves your low end is a plus, but I think you could achieve that same effect with the Orbital Modulator.

The Tech 21 doesn't have that same function, but from what I've heard, it doesn't muddy up your sound either.

For kicks and giggles I would check out the Sea Machine by EQD, but more as a novelty. For a bass player it probably wouldn't be a good purchase unless you are purely solo. But I'll be damned if that pedal isn't intriguing as hell.

Now that is interesting. Huge amount of control over the filter, and that thing gets trippy haha. It is so much more than just a chorus pedal though, and it makes everything in these demos sound so pretty! :crying: :')

I use an MXR M-117R flanger. The "regen" knob usually stays fully CCW, unless I am going for a more intense effect. It is possible to get a more subtle modulation with some tweaking of the width & manual controls as well. If you go with the MXR- avoid using batteries and stick with the external power supply.

For more $$ TC Electronic Chorus/flanger is very nice.

By the way, Bass Boost Chorus owners: the detune knob seems pretty incredible. Do you find a use for the standard modulation with speed and depth, or does the detune function kind of make that useless? It seems like the standard style of modulation kind of kills your tone? I'd like to hear more about that though, if you folks wouldn't mind sharing.

Oh well, just ordered a Bass Boost Chorus. Probably a smart move. Orbital Modulator probably would have been a smart move too. But I had to make a call and that's what happened.

Oh and ordered a Dispatch Master too. I hope I love both of these pedals. Will share my thoughts in a few weeks when I get a chance to be around my amp and cabs again.

Will be sure to post my thoughts, when the time is right. My amp/cabs are at my parents' house (my apartment would not be conducive to the volume I enjoy while practicing/jamming by myself), and I'm about to move into town to get closer to college, so it's gonna be a weird couple of weeks. But in my new place I'll have room for my equipment.

That's just to say, I'll let you gents know what I think once I've had time to properly and objectively assess the pedals on my equipment and not just a practice amp. Keep in mind I'm a solo player right now, so I'm not sure if my opinion will have any value unless you are also a solo player.

I personally never found much use for a flanger in my playing. On the other had, I've found chorus to complement my particular style (meant in the most unpretentious way possible) quite well as I tend to use chords often. I use an MXR Analog Chorus. That's the sky blue five-knob one. It's got quite a nice sound to it, and thanks to the bass and treble filters is quite tweakable.

I'd like to second what other posters have said about chorus: a little goes a long way.

I love flangers and chorus, I currently own two flangers and one chorus. Chorus I feel is hard to get right on bass, I had gone through three before finding one that I like that keeps enough low end. I currently am using the TC Corona Chorus and it is cool. A little chorus goes sooooooooo far. I use flanger more though in conjunction with other effects.

Well this thread has been inactive for awhile but if anyone is still following, I am buying a Boss CE-3 MIJ chorus pedal today. Less than half the price of the Tech 21 so if it works out it'll be awesome. If not, i can always resell. It's a vintage pedal. I'll let y'all know what i think later :D
