Chris Squire and Yes were huge early musical influences for me back in the 70's. Played a Ric for many years, mostly because I wanted that sound. I've always referenced his technique and playing style when citing great players who don't necessarily follow the rules for bass. Gave me the freedom to do the same sometimes.

Very sad day indeed.

I don't even know what to say, completely devastated...... RIP Chris Squire, you will always be remembered.....

At least I was able to witness his mastery before this tragedy..... truly a great loss for all bassists.

2015 has been a terrible year for music with all of these untimely deaths, I don't remember one worse......

My heart just dropped three feet reading the title of this thread. I knew he wasn't doing well, but somehow I thought he would pull through.

Just horrible news and what's going to really rip this wound open is when they have some fake tribute at the next Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee ceremony.

Sad part is they likely won't do a tribute. And possibly even worse if they do, the HOF/commercial "favorites" that will be brought out as "bass" players for the tribute.

No disrespect to Nick R. who played bass for the Rush tribute at HOF a few years back, but there seem to be no current bass icons that can be called on to offer real tribute and skill for these classic rock bassists. I know there is talent out there, but they are not getting the call for these type of events. Sad . . .

I'll never forget how blown away I was when I heard "No Opportunity Needed No Experience Necessary" on an underground radio broadcast around 1970. Now this was a bassist the likes of which I had never heard, wonderful player, and an influence to this day. Sad and will be missed.

I only saw him perform live once, and that was in 1974. We were both fairly young then.

He completely owned his instrument, I do remember that.

This. I couldn't believe the sound I was hearing the first time I heard Roundabout on the radio. Even as a guitarist for most of my playing life, I HAD to learn those bass parts.
