Chris Squire's Fender

I was watching a video of the original Yes lineup playing Time and a Word, and I noticed that Chris Squire was playing a Fender Precision (Picture in the link):

I was wondering how he modified it.

If I had to hazard a guess, there's another single coil under that cover, with a separate volume and tone for it, three way switch, and it's likely to be wired in stereo, as are all of Chris Squire's basses.

Looks like he removed the pickguard, added a Jazz bass (or another Tele bass) pickup, added a Telecaster control plate for bridge pickup vol/tone and 3 way pickup switch, and a Jazz bass pickup cover.

It's a '70 Telecaster bass, with added pickup. Was missing for years but Chris got it back about 3 years ago.

Somewhere around 1971 Chris got divorced and his ex got some of his basses ... The Fender precision and a Rickenbacker 4001 with 21 frets.

The Fender p-bass with the singles coil pickup are a good way to cop the Squire tone without using a Rick.

Shhhh.... the stupid modder is Steve Howe.

It looks like he fitted a Telecaster guitar control plate above the original plate. However it also looks like the bass has Rickenbacker knobs...

He didn't get divorced in 1971, much later. That Telecaster bass was used in "Lucky Seven" of his solo album, "Sweet Dreams", "A Time And A Word" and he says in a 'rig rundown' video that he played it in "A Venture" too.

I believe he modded it with the second pickup wired stereo like his Rickenbacker.

He wasn't the only one to rip apart a nice old Fender and add some mods..
