Just picked up another set of strings from Skip for my fiver. He showed me one of those monsters. All I can say is....DAMN THAT IS ONE BIG ASS STRING! My B string is .150 which is big. I'm going to have to file my nut so it fits. But the .254......Holy Sh*t.

And for those of you who don't know or haven't met Skip. Great guy and stand up dude. Although to come up with a bass string that big he's got to be a little demented.:D

What's the scale length? I thought Steinbergers were less than 34", in which case, you'll have some troubles.

Might want to email Circle K on it as well.

Section 4 discusses single ball strings. The ball end is put into the bridge and the string is fed through the hole in the nut/headpiece. It is then tightened with an allen wrench.

Based on all that information, that string set should fit. You may have to file the headpiece slots a bit to fit a .166 string.

It's time for me to take my six string and go lower. I was thinking about going with E0, but the thought of Eb intrigues me. So now I'm in a little conundrum. I don't think I like EADGCF, so I was thinking about going with an open tuning EBEBEF#. Unfortunately, that doesn't allow me to play Eb. Another tuning that caught my attention was D#G#C#F#C#F# (or EbAbDbGbDbGb depending on who you are). Anyone have any suggestions?

I was going to try that C#0... but I can find more guitarists willing to play an octave down. I don't know many who are going to go lower than that!

I don't usually ask questions regarding tunings anymore, but since I've never used these tunings, I call upon the masters (mainly Skip).

If I tuned EBEBEF# (with the lowest note being E0), what strings would you recommend? I told you before I like the tension of Drop D and Drop C. Not too tight, not too loose. For this sort of tuning, I would prefer something with a similar tension to Drop D.

If I took the other route and went for EbAbDbGbDbGb, what strings would you recommend?

This should be very interesting!

It'll be curious to see where guitarists go when they can go anywhere . . . outside of standard tunings I'm finding D, drop D, C and drop C to be the most prevalent alt tunings. Really though - being able to see what guys are doing with their basses is pretty cool.

As a suggestion, maybe working with a D on bottom. That would give you your Eb at 1st position, and leave opportunity open to jam in a familiar key.

Your EBEBEF# would land about; .200 .136 .102 .067 .051 .045 (.016p - not sure what octave you want).

EbAbDbGbDbGb; .210 .166 .124 .094 .061 .045

If I had a .210 and tuned it up half a step to E0, what sort of tension would I be looking at? Would it be tight? What if I had the .200 and tuned it down half a step to Eb?

Those sets would be custom (all singles), correct?

Also, I completely forgot I posted this here so you can disregard my e-mail and we'll talk in the open. This way other people who are interested can see.

Actually, since I have a Circle K set of strings on for Ab, I might not even need a whole set. I'm trying to remember what the exact gauges are. I know it was a balanced set so it might be .166, .124, .094, .070, .053, .037.

If that's the case, I'll just need to order a .210 and a .061. I have all kinds of .045 strings kicking around, including a brand new DR Lo-Rider, which is one of my favorite standard sets of strings. This just got so much better... aside from the $21 shipping fee.
