I just bought a Cirrus Bxp used because I liked the feel/sound/price. I decided to put on new strings and set the intonation as is my habit with new guitars.
I ordered the Cirrus 5 string set and installed them that day. I was surprised to find that their appear to be a smaller gauge and to have lower tension from the strings I removed. I didn't want to mess with the action or the sound so I went in search of the exact replacements. Sound familiar?
Based on the colored ball ends, I assume that the original strings are D'Addario. There is no visible tape or silk showing on either end of the orginal strings.
I went to GC, and based on their recommendation and in the absence of super long scale strings, I bought the D'Addario EXL170-5 45-130 long scale strings. While some of the outer windings extended beyond the nut, some did not, rendering the set useless on this 35" scale bass. The D and G strings, especially, appeared to be a smaller gauge then the original strings.
So I went to D'Addarios website and all of the strings in the super long scale appear to be 45-130 (just like the XL's I tried) vs the 50 -135 option in the long scale.
So do I have a discontinued D'Addario set or did someone mix and match individual strings? Or are these another brand of strings all together?
In the mean time, I put the original strings back on and while they feel better, they do sound a bit worn out. So any help regarding the appropriate replacements would be welcomed.
