I have a Peavey TVX 410 cab in one of my rehearsal spaces that someone gave me because the tweeter is blown and it's stoopid heavy. Anything I have has the tweeter switched off if it has one.Spoken like a man who never flips his gear!![]()

Turn every single knob (except contours, compressors, etc) to the right and hit all the strings as hard as you possibly can.Define full volume...
just got my first Class D amplifier:

... But can't see where the volume potentiometer should be connected. Surely a Class D amplifier is not expected to run flat out continuously and rely only on a preamp to adjust the output volume?!
If not then where should the master volume be attached, please?

Why not? Every other instrument amp I've ever owned or worked on, tube or solid state, does exactly that. Look at on-line schematics if you don't believe me. The only rig I've got that has a volume control on the power amp is a modular preamp/power-amp rig where the Crown XLS-1500 has a volume control. Which I run flat-out....Surely a Class D amplifier is not expected to run flat out continuously and rely only on a preamp to adjust the output volume?!

well, so I'm told BUT is that correct?So that should give you the idea...if the level you input drives the level output...you want something in the front that is altering the voltage the amp is seeing right?

I think you need to assume what the manufacturer assumes (uses actually) to drive the amp (type of signal and level) when they are measuring the amp's power output.
One method would be to use a sine wave at 1KHz like you suggested, and drive the input just to the point of clipping of the output. Then if you want to fudge the power outputs drive it harder.
There is no standard for this so different amp builders will have different ways to measure power.
That's why, all else being equal, two different amps rated for the same power, may see one being louder under playing conditions than another.
BTW... knobs on amps carry no calibration. Just because a level is set at 7 does not mean the amp is running at 70% power. The only guarantee on the knobs is that all the way down is all the way down, and all the way up is all the way up. I suspect most of the time your amp at "70%" was running a lot less than 70%.
