Class D and Neo cabs are the future!

Actually, there's TON's of gear for the home audio market that runs on tubes. It's more expensive of course, but is far dead.

Are you talking about the sub $1500 market or over $1500 market? Home audio tube amps can run up to tens of thousands of dollars and the cheapest Chinese ones on E-bay are a minimum of $500, Oh and of course Any good Home audio tube amp has all the options of a Volume knob and selector switch with Stereo outputs. Not like those surround sound units that come with subwoofers, and 5.1 pre programed eq crap. When someone is willing to drop $400 for a boxplate mullard instead of 10 cents for a transistor there's gotta be something to that too?

By the way I like tubes.

Tube amps and heavy speakers will always have a market. It doesn't matter if they did come out with a 5lb amp and a 20 lb speaker cabinet that exactly duplicated the sound of an SVT with an 8x10 refrigerator hooked up to it.

Because people would still claim to hear the difference. There's a reason there's a market for $1000 audiophile speaker cables.

People love to feel special, they can hear a difference that you can't.

There is allot of snake oil in the audiophile world, but I'll bet you can hear the difference between poor cables and decent ones, as long as they are caring an analogue signal. But don't ever wast your money on the fancy cables for a digital signal, that is hog wash. When it comes to tubes, some are pricey because they are very rare and offer a distinct sound, but there are often cheap ones in abundance that sound equally as good and are in abundance.

True, but if you do the math, an Eminence S2012 is 4.1 lbs. / 16.4 lbs total for a 4x12. A Deltalite II 10" is only 4.6 lbs. / 36.8 lbs total for an 8x10. 1/2 inch plywood and more strategic bracing isn't brain science/rocket surgery.
we're only seeing the surface being scratched with neos and their cabs. i think the best is yet to come with them.

so are we being put in a position in this thread where we absolutely have to choose? because i have tube amps and a class d amp and i'm getting a couple neo cabs along with my svt and b-15 cabs. they're all great for what they do, and i'd hate to have to get rid of one set of gear or the other.

TalkBass Unspoken Rule #17 in play: "When confronted with a choice of two apparently opposite opinions or options. you must completely and exclusively hew to one of them or the other - preferably in as dogmatic a fashion as possible. No sensible splitting of the difference, compromise, or situational application allowed!"

As great as the new micro-super-light stuff sounds, nothing....I mean NOTHING will beat an SVT and an 8x10.

Don't get me wrong, I have an 5-lb 500 watt amp and Neo speakers. But I also have tubes.

I also like fat, baseball bat necks and basses that weigh at least 9.5 lbs. Nothing feels better than strapping a log to your body.

+ 1 on this, but I can't say I ALWAYS agree on the necks lol. I feel the same way, its good to have both options...sort of like owning more than one bass, never hurts to be versatile :bassist:

What it all comes down to is, as always, the money. When manufacturers run out of sufficient customers willing to pay the ever increasing price for tubes, heavy iron and strontium they will go the way of the Hummer and the McMansion. And Basson.
And when China decides not to export any more rare earth metals, like neo, to support their defense and computer industries, the comeback of ceramic magnet speakers will be hailed as a tonal renaissance.

Ya, the cheap ones [tubes] sound great until they crap out on you in 3 months. Trust me, this has happened to me before.

how silly of me to forget. of course!

well i'm still going to keep mixing the two up anyway, even though it's just crazy to think it could happen.

In combination with Talkbass Unspoken Rule #6, this thread was bound to have at least a handful of fail responses:

"To have an opinion on any gear mentioned requires only that the poster has 2nd, 3rd, 4th, etc. hand knowledge of the gear in question. Actual experience, for any length of time, is optional."

:D

I think I'm liking the combinations of class D amps and heavy speakers and vice versa and everything in between. I just got an Eden WTX-500 and it sounds really nice with a pair of Joe's Speaker and Salami cabs loaded with JBL K-120s. OTOH, I've played through a couple of neo cabs with my Alembic/CA9 rig and that sounds cool too.

It's so nice to have so many options that actually work. It wasn't always like this.

I owned an SWR SM900. I spent a fortune on Sylvania tubes made in the 50's because I had read on Talkbass and other sites that they were the Holy Grail of tone. I also purchased a SWR 410 cab (95 pounds). Well I was underwhelmed. I purchased an Epifani head (class D) and their UL cabs (neo magnets) and haven"t looked back. The tone is fat, yet clear and warm. You can't get the overdrive that you can get from tubes, but that tone does not fit my style of play so I didn't lose anything there. I also bought the Genz Benz gear; didn't work for me. So I will say that all Neo's and Class D aren't made the same, and that also applies to tube amps and cabs with traditional magnets. It would be nice if we could do a blind test and see what people would choose, not knowing what they were playing through, and letting their ear decide. I bet we would get interesting results.

wouldn't exactly call a sm-900 a tube amp, bro. it's got one but tube amps to me mean power tubes. but i agree you have to judge each piece of gear on its own merits and not make assumptions. there are even tube amps i don't care for. not very many, though ;)
