Class D - What's next?

Smaller. I think were are heading there anyway. I.E. The Trace Elliot ELF with double the wattage (400w-500w) would be nice. But seriously, how much smaller do we really need to go? Most Class D amps are 3lb-6lbs. We're seeing smaller powered subs and mains/monitors for PA applications which is great for bars/restaurants/clubs.

I agree with an above poster regarding volume. There really need to be a cap put on some of the ridiculous volume some bands put out. Seriously...1000+watts?? Metal bands.....loud just to be loud because it's a "thing"?? We don't need any more wattage. Do we need to give bands a reason and the means to be even louder?!

Find other things to incorporate into amps. I like the idea of DSP with saveable 'scenes' for different venues. Maybe wireless capability built in and sell transmitters as accessories.

Should the power amp move to the cab since amps are so light now? Does it make sense to put the power amp in another enclosure? It did when the amp weighed 30+ lbs and cabs weighed 100 lbs, but now if I pull the EQ section from the head and put that on my pedalboard and move the power amp into the cab itself. When the power amp and speaker are coupled you can use DSP to gain shaping and protection otherwise unattainable. That's how I would go with future cabs / preamp. You can still go direct if you don't need a cab, use it as a monitor if you like feeling your pants legs flap or use it as a standalone cab if you happen to play something without back line.

Yeah, that's how I think this whole thing should be headed.

Well, there is a guitar rack now with plug-in modules for Marshall modules, etc...

May one day be cabs with a built-in small footprint module rack connection for different modules for different amp colors...

Somebody may come up with a totally new speaker motor design....and/or cone....

Who knows.... besides the Shadow....and he's been scarce for a good while.....

Guys, I don’t understand why there 9 pages of (mostly) ridiculous answers.

DSP is the future of amps.

Amps will all have ADAs built in, a CPU, and then a Class D output stage.

It’s already here, see Bergantino B Amp.

Anyone who has any DAW based recording experience knows that its all going “in the box”.

There is no reason “the box” can’t be made to look like a bass amp have an amplifier incorporated into it.

My mother's best friend from school was a music director and music librarian for that show for several years during the 1960's.

They have their own culture and their own music that is much more important to them than the music of previous generations. They have their own nostalgia and they will cling to their own irrelevancies.

Are you guys dense? Do you care as much about your grandpa's music as you do for the music of your youth? What's wrong with you? I'm not telling you anything you shouldn't already know. This has been happening since people have existed. It's obvious. You're not immune to the passage of time. You will die and everything you care for will also pass from existence. That's how it works.

Well thanks for that super fun upbeat positive forward looking opinion!!!!!

My sons favorite band ? Fleetwood Mac. He’s 15. And - I did not turn him on to it. He found it himself. He and his buddies went to a Beatles tribute concert last night and loved every minute of it. They talked about accuracy, production, sound. “Paul McCartney LOOKED like Paul McCartney” I am sooo proud. I believe the youth are beginning to realize the vapidity of modern stuff and appreciate the quality of generations past. Now get off my lawn....

As far as what’s after class D?? Uh.... Class E?? :laugh:

Your generation is just as vapid and stupid as every other generation has ever been. You're not special. You're just a regular human like everybody else. And if you think otherwise it is because you are in a state of arrested development. A man child. You cannot be an adult and also be unaware of your own insignificance, of your own impermanence, and the flaws in your own culture.

Not dense, more cultured polite and educated. Museums are just full of trash leftover from people who died eons ago and nobody has any interest in viewing these items. Music of the classical era has no value.
To quote a great orator of a previous generation,

That's just like your opinion man.
