Classic 60s Jazz, new strings and a good setup.

Last week I bought me a new Classic 60 Fender Jazz. Great bass. Love the neck. When I got her home thought something didn't feel right. I gave the neck a little relief, tweaked the string height and set the intonation but she just didn't feel right. Still something off. To get the playability I was looking for a had to shim the neck and still wasn't happy with the setup. Then it occurred to me that she hates round wounds.

So last night I plowed through the TB string forum and decided to try a set of Roto 77s. I'm always amazed that a bass will choose the string. I set everything back to Fender spec. Put the Rotos on and it was like giving water to a starved plant. The neck settled into the tension. I removed the shim and reset the relief. Intonation is "perfect" and now my Jazz purrs. She loves flats.

I can still get a good bark out of her put it's not shrill. Tone is fat but with definition. The perfect combination.

Now I'm gassing for the Classic 50 P.. :D

I just acquired one myself, the white one. Currently with flats, but it also sounds great with rounds. Every bit of the AV62RI if you ask me.
